What the 7th grade math MCAS covers

The state's test design gives grade 7 five reporting categories. Expressions and Equations is the largest, 25 percent: equivalent expressions, two-step equations, inequalities and number sequences. Three categories have 20 percent each. Ratios and Proportional Relationships covers unit rates with fractions, tax and percent change. The Number System is adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing negative numbers. Statistics and Probability is random samples and chance. Geometry, 15 percent, has scale drawings, circles, angle pairs and surface area.

Standards under each answer

Under every answer is its standard in the 2017 Massachusetts framework, such as 7.RP.A.3. The two sequence questions practice 7.EE.B.4c of that framework.

  • Session 1 allows no calculator, so work the fraction, percent and negative-number questions on paper.

Questions and answers

How many questions are on the 7th grade math MCAS?

The test design has 40 common questions worth 54 points: 34 worth one point, 2 worth two points and 4 constructed-response questions worth four points each. Eight more are field test or equating questions that do not count.

Can you use a calculator on the 7th grade math MCAS?

In one of its two sessions. The test design allows no calculator in Session 1 and allows calculators in Session 2 for grades 7 and 8. Grades 3 to 6 have no calculator in either session.

How is the 7th grade math MCAS scored?

Each student is placed in one of four achievement levels: Exceeding, Meeting, Partially Meeting or Not Meeting Expectations. The test design sets no percent to pass, so a percent on this page is practice only.

Where are the state's MCAS math 7th grade practice tests?

The department posts released questions and practice tests of its own, and the button in the box under the questions goes to them. This page is separate, unofficial practice.
