How this list was compiled: Outline: Mathematics Test Specifications for MCA-III, Grades 3–8 and 11, based on the Minnesota K–12 Academic Standards in Mathematics, 2007 version (Minnesota Department of Education, September 2019): the grade 7 strands, standards, benchmarks and item specifications, Table 2A (items per strand), Table 3A (items by type) and Table 8A (minimum and maximum item counts by standard, online adaptive test). The document is linked from the department's page Test Specifications, https://education.mn.gov/MDE/dse/test/spec/. The page and the document were read 2026-10-13 in the Internet Archive's copies (https://web.archive.org/web/2026/https://education.mn.gov/MDE/dse/test/spec/; the document in the copy of 6 March 2026). The four strands in 7th grade
Algebra carries the most weight in grade 7, so it has 15 of the 42 questions here: telling proportional relationships from others, unit rates, discounts, tax and percent change, equivalent expressions and equations. Number & Operation has 13, on rational and negative numbers, interest and absolute value. Geometry & Measurement has 7: circles, cylinders, similar figures, scale and translations. Data Analysis & Probability has 7. Each count sits inside the range the specifications set.
What an answer shows
First the working, line by line, then a benchmark number such as 7.2.2.2. That number is Minnesota's own label for the skill, so a missed question points to one line of the standards.
Questions on benchmark 7.1.2.1 are bare calculations with negative fractions and decimals, with no story around them. Practice those until they are quick.
Questions and answers
How many questions are on the 7th grade math MCA?
A student answers about 50, in four groups, and 42 of them are scored. Of the scored ones, 32 to 40 are multiple choice and the rest are technology-enhanced. Field test questions make up the difference.
Is the grade 7 MCA timed?
It has no time limit: students keep working while they are making progress. Schools usually set aside 1.5 to 2 hours for a math MCA in grades 3 to 8, the range in the state's procedures manual.
Can you use a calculator on the 7th grade math MCA?
Only in the groups of questions that allow one, where grades 6 and 7 get an online scientific calculator. Handheld calculators are not allowed on the online test. An online formula sheet is there for every question.
Is there an MCA practice test for grade 7 reading?
Not on this page, which is math only. Seventh graders take the Reading MCA too, and science waits until grade 8. The state's Student Readiness Tools show how its online tests work.
Which standards does the grade 7 math MCA follow?
The 2007 Minnesota mathematics standards, as these questions do. The procedures manual lists spring 2027 as the last math MCA on them; from spring 2028 the test follows the 2022 standards.
