What is on the grade 7 test
Three domains carry it. NYSED's educator guide sets Expressions, Equations, and Inequalities at 26 to 39 percent of the questions, Ratios and Proportional Relationships at 24 to 33 and The Number System at 16 to 25. Statistics and Probability gets 12 to 21 percent. Geometry gets only 2 to 7, because circles, angles, area and volume are taught in May and June, after testing; the three geometry questions here are scale drawings. Grade 6 statistics, taught late the year before, is tested in grade 7.
Under each answer
Each explanation gives the steps and then the standard's code, such as NY-7.RP.3 on a percent problem. The arithmetic was checked by a second calculation.
Grade 7 students have a scientific calculator in both sessions, and the reference sheet prints conversions between inches and centimeters, pounds and kilograms.
Questions and answers
How many questions are on the 7th grade NYS math test?
The grade 7 design has 48: 38 multiple choice and 10 constructed response. Session 1 is 32 multiple-choice questions, some of them field test questions that do not count. Session 2 has 6 multiple-choice questions and the 10 constructed-response ones.
Is the 7th grade NYS math test timed?
No. Students get as much time as they need within the school day. For planning, NYSED estimates 80 to 90 minutes for Session 1 and 75 to 85 minutes for Session 2 in grade 7.
Can you use a calculator on the 7th grade NYS math test?
Yes, a scientific calculator in both sessions; graphing calculators are not permitted. Students testing on a computer also have a calculator in the testing program, plus a ruler, a protractor and the grade 7 reference sheet.
Why is there so little geometry on the grade 7 test?
Five of the six grade 7 geometry standards, NY-7.G.2 to NY-7.G.6, are designated for teaching in May and June, after the test. Only scale drawings, NY-7.G.1, is tested in grade 7; the guide lists the other five for the grade 8 test.
What is a good score on the 7th grade NYS math test?
New York reports four levels, and Level 3 is proficient. In 2026 a grade 7 mathematics scale score of 450 to 476 was Level 3 and 477 to 515 was Level 4. A percent here is not a scale score.
