How the real test is weighted
Selected-response items carry 40% of the Part One score and 25% of the Part Two score, the framework of April 2020 says. Performance tasks carry the rest, among them the observation of a teacher on video. This page does not mark writing.
Where the questions come from
The bank copies the framework's numbers: 25 questions on instructional leadership, 16 on school culture, 10 on family and community engagement and 16 on operations and law. Sixty rest on a named section of New York or federal law, and seven use school data of our own.
Timing here
Exam mode asks all 67 in 180 minutes, the time the framework plans for the items of both parts.
Developing human capital, the first Part Two competency, has no selected-response items in the framework. The video observation and the evaluation-data task test it.
Questions and answers
Is there an NYS SBL practice test PDF?
Yes. The Print the question sheet button puts all 67 questions on paper, with the answer key if you tick it, and the print window saves it as a PDF. The questions are our own, not the official practice tests sold on the NYSTCE site.
What score do you need to pass the School Building Leader test?
The test's own page gives a passing score of 520. That is a scaled score and not a count of right answers, so this page shows your number right and no pass verdict.
Can you take the two parts of the SBL on different days?
Yes. The test's own page says you may take one or both parts at one test appointment. Candidates must take and pass both parts.
Are these real School Building Leader questions?
No. Every question is our own, written to the competencies of New York's framework. Nothing is taken or reworded from the real test or from the sample items in its study guide.
