What the grade 8 RISE math test covers

The blueprint sets a share for each of four domains, and this page keeps them. Geometry / The Number System is the largest, 34 to 40 percent: transformations, congruence and similarity, angle facts, the Pythagorean Theorem, volume, irrational numbers and radicals. Functions is 20 to 24 percent: rate of change, initial value and y = mx + b. Expressions and Equations is 20 to 24 percent: exponents, scientific notation, linear equations and systems. Statistics and Probability is 16 to 20 percent: scatter plots, linear models and two-way tables.

Three Utah standards to know

Utah's core standards for grade 8 include simplifying square roots (8.NS.3), solving inequalities and solving absolute value equations (8.EE.7). All three are practiced here, and each answer names its standard.

  • RISE follows the course, not the grade: a student enrolled in Secondary Mathematics I takes that test.

Questions and answers

How many questions are on the Utah grade 8 math test?

The RISE blueprint lists 50 operational items for grade 8 mathematics. The test is adaptive, so the blueprint calls its domain percentages targets and says each student's experience will vary.

Is the Utah RISE math test timed?

No. The State Board's guide for families says RISE assessments are not timed.

What is a passing score on the grade 8 RISE math test?

The state reports a scale score and one of four proficiency levels: Below Proficient, Approaching Proficient, Proficient or Highly Proficient. It gives no percent to pass, so a percent here is not a RISE result.

Does Utah have its own grade 8 math practice test?

The Utah RISE portal has training tests that let students try the tools, question types and navigation. The box under the questions links to them. This page is separate, unofficial practice.
