How this list was compiled: Outline: Indiana Assessment Framework: Mathematics, the Grade 6 ILEARN sheet (test blueprint beginning school year 2025-2026), Indiana Department of Education, https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1KfjJpB4Ka3vjh79CsFddrkv0BwTd1BAW/edit, linked from the department's ILEARN page, https://www.in.gov/doe/students/assessment/ilearn/, read 2026-10-13: the reporting categories and their share of the summative test, the number of items, and the 2023 Indiana Academic Standards listed under each category with their limits (a greatest common factor of two whole numbers to 100, conversions with the factor given). Each question names the standard it practices. The two conversion factors are those of the ILEARN Grade 6 Mathematics Reference Sheet, https://www.in.gov/doe/files/ILEARN-Mathematics-Reference-Sheet.docx-1-1.pdf. How it works

ISTEP+ practice for 6th grade now means ILEARN practice: Indiana's sixth graders take ILEARN math. Here are 42 unofficial questions in its blueprint's five reporting categories, written for this site and not affiliated with the Indiana Department of Education.

What the 6th grade math test covers

The grade 6 ILEARN blueprint reports five categories, with ratios in a category of their own, and each has its share of the questions below. Number Sense: negative numbers, ordering rational numbers, fractions and decimals, order of operations, greatest common factor. Ratios and Proportional Reasoning: fraction, decimal and percent conversions, unit rates, ratio tables. Algebra and Functions: expressions, one-step equations, inequalities, the coordinate plane. Geometry, measurement and data: angle sums, composite area, prism volume, histograms, the mean. Mathematical Processes: multi-step problems and finding an error.

Where ISTEP+ went

ISTEP+ is absent from the assessment programs Indiana lists today. ILEARN has three Checkpoints through the year, then a summative test in April to May. Each answer names its 2023 Indiana Academic Standard, such as 6.RP.4.

  • Every Number Sense standard is tested without a calculator. Work fractions, decimals and percents by hand.
  • The grade 6 reference sheet gives conversion factors and three area formulas. The prism formula V = lwh is not on it.

Questions and answers

Is there an ILEARN practice test for 6th grade?

Yes, for math: the 42 questions on this page, each answer worked in steps. Indiana also keeps a Released Items Repository of its own on the ILEARN portal.

How many questions are on the 6th grade ILEARN math test?

Between 32 and 37 count toward the score on the spring summative test, and 20 to 25 on each Checkpoint. The number is a range because ILEARN adapts to the student as it goes.

Can you use a calculator on the 6th grade ILEARN math test?

On less than half of the content. Fourteen of the 25 grade 6 content standards are non-calculator: 6.NS.1 to 6.NS.8, 6.AF.1 to 6.AF.5 and 6.RP.1. Rate, geometry and data questions come with an on-screen calculator.

What is a passing score on 6th grade ILEARN math?

Indiana sets no passing percent. On the grade 6 scale of 423 to 713, a score of 525 reaches Approaching Proficiency, 561 reaches At Proficiency and 617 reaches Above Proficiency.
