What the grade 8 social studies M-STEP covers
Three school years. U.S. History, the largest share, is the grade 8 course: the Constitution, expansion and reform, the road to the Civil War. Geography is the grade 6 world course: location, climate, population, culture and human impact. World History is grade 7, from hunter-gatherers and the first civilizations to empires and trade before 1500. Civics and Economics are the two smallest shares.
Michigan in the questions
Several answers turn on Michigan: the Northwest Ordinance kept slavery out of the territory, Detroit was surrendered in 1812, the Republican Party formed at Jackson in 1854, and two countries share the care of the Great Lakes.
Geography is nearly as large as U.S. history and was taught in grade 6. Review the five themes and map skills.
