What the grade 5 social studies M-STEP covers
The blueprint weighs five disciplines almost alike. U.S. History runs from the first sea voyages and the thirteen colonies to the Revolution and the Constitution. History (Michigan) is a discipline of its own, from the first peoples to statehood and the auto plants. Civics, Economics and Geography come mostly from grades 3 and 4: Michigan's three branches, the market economy, regions and maps.
How the answers are checked
Each answer names its Michigan expectation, such as 5 – U3.1.2. Michigan facts were read in the Legislature's Michigan Manual and the state constitution, and national facts at the National Archives, the Office of the Historian and the Senate.
For Michigan history, learn the Three Fires, the French forts, the Erie Canal, the Toledo War and statehood in 1837.
Questions and answers
How many questions are on the 5th grade social studies M-STEP?
Michigan publishes ranges, not one number: 10 to 12 U.S. history items, 9 to 11 each for civics, Michigan history and geography, and 8 to 10 for economics. That adds up to 45 to 55. This page has 46.
Is the M-STEP social studies test timed?
No. Every M-STEP test is untimed and student-paced. For grade 5 social studies the Spring 2026 manual plans one session and estimates one hour.
What grades take the M-STEP social studies test?
Grades 5, 8 and 11. The grade 5 test measures what students should know by the end of grade 5 from grades 3, 4 and 5, so Michigan studies from grade 3 is on it.
What is a good score on the M-STEP social studies test?
There is no passing score. Michigan reports four performance levels, and Level 3, Proficient, means consistently showing the knowledge and skills of the standards. A percent on this page is not an M-STEP score.
Does Michigan have its own M-STEP social studies practice test?
Yes. The department's online practice shows the real question types; the test facts on this page link to it. The questions here are different: unofficial practice written for this site.
