What the 4th grade M-STEP math test covers

Michigan's blueprint counts items by claim, not by topic, and this page uses the top of each range. Concepts and Procedures has 19 to 20 items: place value to 1,000,000, multi-digit arithmetic, equivalent fractions, decimals to hundredths, measurement units and angles. Communicating Reasoning has 7 to 9: saying why an answer must be right, or finding the slip in someone's thinking. Modeling and Data Analysis has 4 to 6: line plots, tables, area and estimates. Problem Solving has 3 to 5: word problems with more than one step.

Two M-STEP tests in grade 4

Fourth graders take English language arts and mathematics only; the state's schedule lists science and social studies for grade 5. Each answer here names its standard, such as 4.NF.3.

Questions and answers

How many questions are on the 4th grade M-STEP math test?

The blueprint gives a range of items for each claim and no total; the four ranges add up to 33 to 40. The test is computer adaptive, with no performance task.

How long does the 4th grade M-STEP take?

M-STEP is untimed. For scheduling, the state's Spring 2026 manual estimates 1 hour 30 minutes for mathematics and 2 hours for English language arts in grade 4, which is 3 hours 30 minutes in all.

Are calculators allowed on the 4th grade M-STEP?

No. The state's manual says calculators may not be used on any item of the grades 3, 4 and 5 mathematics tests, online or on paper, even for a student whose education plan lists one.

What M-STEP score does a 4th grader need to pass?

None: Michigan says M-STEP is not pass or fail. A scale score puts the student in one of four performance levels, from Not Proficient through Partially Proficient and Proficient to Advanced.

Does Michigan have its own M-STEP practice for 4th grade?

Yes. The department's M-STEP page links to online practice for English language arts, math, science and social studies, with answer keys, and the box under the questions links there. The questions here are different ones.
