What the third grade RISE math test covers

The blueprint gives four domains a share of the 45 items, and this page keeps them. Operations and Algebraic Thinking is the largest, 29 to 38 percent: multiplying and dividing within 100, unknown numbers, two-step problems and patterns. Number and Operations - Fractions is 27 to 31 percent: unit fractions, number lines, equal fractions and comparing. Number and Operations in Base Ten is 18 to 22 percent: rounding, and adding and subtracting within 1,000. Measurement and Data and Geometry is 18 to 22 percent.

Two Utah details

Utah's Standard 3.OA.8 has third graders work in the conventional order when a problem has no parentheses, so 4 + 3 × 5 is here. Fractions keep to the denominators 2, 3, 4, 6 and 8.

  • Utah expects every product of two one-digit numbers from memory by the end of third grade (Standard 3.OA.7).

Questions and answers

How many questions are on the 3rd grade RISE math test?

The RISE blueprint lists 45 operational items for grade 3 mathematics; grades 4 to 8 have 50. The test is adaptive, so the blueprint calls its domain percentages targets and says each student's experience will vary.

Is the RISE test timed in third grade?

No. The State Board's guide for families says RISE assessments are not timed.

Do third graders take RISE science?

No. The State Board's guide for families lists RISE mathematics and English language arts from grade 3 and science from grade 4. Writing is tested in grades 5 and 8.

What is a good RISE score for a third grader?

The state reports a scale score and one of four proficiency levels: Below Proficient, Approaching Proficient, Proficient or Highly Proficient. It gives no percent to pass, so a percent here is not a RISE result.

Where is the Utah RISE practice test for 3rd grade from the state?

The Utah RISE portal has training tests that let students try the tools, question types and navigation. The box under the questions links to them. The questions on this page are different ones.
