How this list was compiled: Written from the Alaska Administrative Code, Title 5, Chapter 92 (Statewide Provisions), sections 92.003, 92.010, 92.012, 92.080, 92.085, 92.100, 92.130, 92.140, 92.150, 92.220, 92.230, 92.260 and 92.410, and from the Alaska Statutes, sections 16.05.330, 16.05.400, 16.05.405, 16.05.407, 16.05.420, 16.05.789, 16.05.790 and 16.30.010, each opened at the Alaska State Legislature site (https://www.akleg.gov/basis/aac.asp and https://www.akleg.gov/basis/statutes.asp), and from two pages of the Alaska Department of Fish and Game: Alaska Hunter Education Course (https://www.adfg.alaska.gov/index.cfm?adfg=huntered.basichunter) and Hunter Education FAQs (https://www.adfg.alaska.gov/index.cfm?adfg=huntered.faqs). All were read on 2026-10-13; each question names its section or page. The course facts (the online course and field day, the written test, the proficiency shoot) are the department's own; its course page is the published outline this page follows. The department publishes no number of questions and no pass mark for the written test, so none is given here. Licence: Own work. Questions, answer choices and explanations were written for this site from the text of the Alaska regulations and statutes and the facts on the department's public pages; nothing is copied from a hunter education manual, a study guide, an online course, a chapter review or an examination.

How it works

Unofficial practice for Alaska Hunter Education: our own questions from the state hunting regulations, the game statutes and the Department of Fish and Game's course pages, each with its section. Firearm handling is taught and tested at the field day.

Rules that are Alaska's own

A harvest ticket is validated before leaving the kill site. After flying, a hunter waits until 3:00 a.m. the next day to take big game other than deer. All edible meat comes out with or before the antlers.

  • Alaska has no hunter orange rule; the department still suggests at least an orange hat near other hunters.
  • Residents under 18 need no hunting license, but a hunter under 10 gets no big game harvest ticket.

Questions and answers

Do you need hunter education to hunt in Alaska?

Only in some places. Hunters born after January 1, 1986 need it in Units 7, 13, 14, 15 and 20, and everyone needs it in a few areas such as the Anchorage Coastal Wildlife Refuge. No course is needed to buy a license.

How old do you have to be to take hunter safety in Alaska?

There is no minimum age to enroll. The department says the curriculum is designed for 10-year-olds and up, and that younger children may struggle with the written test and the live-fire shoot.

Is the Alaska hunter safety course online?

Partly. The online portion takes 6 to 8 hours and includes a written test, with no published question count or pass mark. A Field Day Qualifier Certificate then admits the student to an in-person field day, which must be finished within one year.

What is the shooting test at the Alaska field day?

After 15 practice shots, the student fires five rounds from standing, kneeling or sitting, with no rest, and must place four of the five in a group. Rifles and ammunition are provided.

Is this an official Alaska Department of Fish and Game test?

No. This page is unofficial and not affiliated with the Alaska Department of Fish and Game. Its questions are our own, written from the regulations and statutes; none comes from the online course or its test.
