How this list was compiled: Written from the 2026 Connecticut Hunting and Trapping Guide as the Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP) publishes it at https://portal.ct.gov/deep/hunting/2026-connecticut-hunting-and-trapping-guide (the pages Hunting Laws and Regulations, Hunting and Trapping Licenses, Deer Hunting, Wild Turkey Hunting, Small Game and Pheasant Hunting), from DEEP's Tagging and Reporting Deer and Turkey Harvests and Junior Hunter Training Days pages, and from Chapter 490 of the Connecticut General Statutes as the General Assembly publishes it at https://www.cga.ct.gov/current/pub/chap_490.htm (sections 26-31, 26-38, 26-62, 26-74, 26-80b and 26-85). All were read on 2026-10-12; each question names its page and section. The course facts (the 50 question multiple choice exam, the firearm handling demonstration, the minimum age of 10, course lengths) are DEEP's own, read the same day on its Connecticut Hunter Education, Traditional Firearms Hunter Safety Course and Self Study Firearms Hunter Safety Course pages under https://portal.ct.gov/deep/hunting/cefs/connecticut-hunter-education; those pages are the published outline this page follows. DEEP publishes no pass mark and no time limit for the exam, so none is given here. Licence: Own work. Questions, answer choices and explanations were written for this site from the text of the Connecticut General Statutes and the facts on DEEP's public pages; nothing is copied from the Connecticut hunter safety manual, a study guide, an online course, a chapter review or an examination.

How it works

Unofficial practice for the 50 question exam in Connecticut's Conservation Education/Firearms Safety course: our own questions from the state's 2026 hunting guide and the General Statutes, each with its section. Firearm handling is taught and tested in the class.

Rules that are Connecticut's own

Hunters put on 400 square inches of fluorescent orange from September 1 through February. No loaded firearm is carried within 500 feet of an occupied building. Deer and turkey hunters carry the landowner's signed consent form. A harvest is tagged at once and reported within 24 hours.

What the exam is

By statute the exam has students state the rules on hunting near occupied buildings and on shooting toward people, buildings or animals. Exam mode here asks 50 questions, the department's figure, and gives a score with no verdict.

  • Deer hours end at sunset; small game hours run to half an hour after it.
  • Hunters aged 12 to 15 go with a licensed adult, who supervises two at most.

Questions and answers

How many questions are on the CT hunter safety test?

The department's course pages say students pass a 50 question multiple choice exam and demonstrate safe firearm handling skills. They give no pass mark and no time limit.

How old do you have to be to take hunter safety in CT?

Students must be 10 or older to attend, and those under 18 are registered and come with a parent or legal guardian. A person must be 12 to hunt.

Can you take the CT hunter safety course online?

Partly. The self-study format is an approved online course, then an in-person field day of about 8 hours with the same 50 question exam. The traditional format is at least 16 hours in person.

Is this the official CT hunter safety test?

No. It is unofficial and not affiliated with the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection. The questions are our own, written from the state's hunting guide and statutes; none comes from the department's exam or its manual.
