How this list was compiled: Written only from chapter 268 of the Connecticut General Statutes, Boating (sections 15-127, 15-129, 15-129a, 15-132, 15-133, 15-134, 15-135, 15-140b, 15-140e, 15-140f, 15-140g, 15-140h, 15-140j, 15-140k, 15-140m, 15-140q, 15-142, 15-143, 15-146, 15-147, 15-149a, 15-150, 15-154 and 15-156), read on the General Assembly's site, https://www.cga.ct.gov/current/pub/chap_268.htm, on 2026-10-12. Each question names its section and links to that section's place on the chapter page. That a course, an equivalency examination and two certificates exist is sections 15-140e and 15-140j. The chapter gives no number of questions and no pass mark. The Department of Energy and Environmental Protection's certification questions page, https://portal.ct.gov/deep/boating/faqs/faqs-certification, read the same day, says a student attends all eight hours and passes the proctored exam with a score of 80% or higher; those figures are the Department's and are stored nowhere in this bank. The Regulations of Connecticut State Agencies were not read and nothing is asked from them. Licence: Own work. Questions, answer choices and explanations were written for this site from the statute text; nothing is copied from a boater handbook, a boating course, a course provider's study guide or another practice test.

For life, 100 feet and six miles per hour

A safe boating certificate lasts for life (15-140e). Vessels stay 100 feet from a diver's marker (15-135). Within 200 feet of a stationary police vessel flashing blue lights, boats drop to slow-no-wake, six miles per hour or less (15-154). Water skiing stops one-half hour after sunset (15-134).

  • Two alcohol limits: eight-hundredths of one per cent at 21 and over, two-hundredths under 21 (section 15-133).
  • Two report clocks: 48 hours after a death, injury or disappearance; five days for damage over $500.

Questions and answers

Do you need a boating license in Connecticut?

The statutes name a safe boating certificate, not a license. Section 15-140e requires it of residents and of anyone owning real property or a vessel in the state who operates a registered boat. A valid Coast Guard operator license also satisfies it.

How many questions are on the Connecticut boating exam, and what is the passing score?

Chapter 268 gives neither. The Department of Energy and Environmental Protection's certification page says students attend all eight hours and pass a proctored exam with 80% or higher. This page's 25-question practice exam is this site's own length, with no pass line.

Does this CT boating license practice test cover personal watercraft?

Yes. A personal watercraft takes its own certificate of personal watercraft operation under section 15-140j, no passenger may ride in front of the operator, and the fourteen-day rental exemption does not reach personal watercraft.

How old do you have to be to drive a boat in Connecticut?

The certificate is issued regardless of age. Under 12, a boat over ten horsepower needs an adult of 18 with a certificate aboard, and the operator of a boat towing a skier must be 16 (section 15-140h).

Is this the official Connecticut safe boating exam?

No. Nothing here comes from the State: this is an independent practice page that the Department of Energy and Environmental Protection has not seen or approved. Check any answer at its section of chapter 268. The approved course teaches more than law.
