How it works
Virginia's knowledge exam has two parts, and this unofficial Virginia permit practice test mirrors the second: 30 general knowledge questions, 24 to pass. Its 260 free law questions come from the Code of Virginia, read 18 September 2026, with 48 more on road signs.

Two parts, and no misses allowed on signs
The Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles gives the exam on a computer. Part one shows ten road signs, and all ten must be right. Part two asks 30 general knowledge questions, 24 correct to pass. Virginia is one of the states with a real DMV. Exam mode, below the question, copies part two. Press Start the exam, and the result shows your score against 24 plus a line for each topic. For part one, open the Topic menu and pick a sign topic, such as Regulatory signs. The menu takes one topic at a time. No mode here demands ten out of ten, so aim for a clean run.
Failed permit test 3 times? Virginia sends you to class
Section 46.2-325 blocks a fourth try until you complete the classroom component of driver instruction, dated after the third failure. Adults may take a Virginia Driver's Manual course instead, in a classroom or online. Between tries, the DMV page sets a full 15 days under 18 and one test per day from 18 up.
Vehicles already in a roundabout have the right-of-way (section 46.2-822), and passing two cars that are moving side by side on a two-lane highway is reckless driving (section 46.2-856).
Unposted limits: 25 mph in a business or residence district (section 46.2-874) and 35 on a city highway outside those districts (section 46.2-875).
Under 18, section 46.2-335 asks for 45 supervised hours before a license, 15 of them after sunset.
