How this list was compiled: Written from the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices for Streets and Highways, 11th Edition (December 2023), Federal Highway Administration, https://mutcd.fhwa.dot.gov/kno_11th_Edition.htm, checked 2026-09-18. Each question names the MUTCD section it was written from. Licence: Own work. Question wording, answer choices and explanations were written for this site from the MUTCD text; nothing is copied from a state driver manual or another practice test.
How it works
This unofficial Colorado permit practice test holds 483 free questions from Title 42 of the Colorado Revised Statutes, read 18 September 2026. Each link opens all of Title 42 as one long file, so search it for the section number. Another 48 questions cover road signs.

What Colorado calls its written exam
The Division of Motor Vehicles names it the Driving Knowledge Test. It is one exam, sat by webcam at home, in an office or at a driving school. Title 42 adds mountain law: on a narrow mountain highway with a grade of 6 percent or more the ascending vehicle has the right-of-way, a curve with the view blocked within 200 feet calls for the horn (C.R.S. 42-4-711), and coasting downhill in neutral is barred (42-4-1009).
Speeds Title 42 sets where no sign stands
C.R.S. 42-4-1101(2) gives 20 mph on narrow, winding mountain highways, 25 in a business district, 30 in a residence district, 40 on open mountain highways, 55 on other open highways and 65 on four-lane interstates and freeways. No posted limit may pass 75.
Under 18, C.R.S. 42-4-116 means no non-family passenger under 21 for the first six months licensed, one until a year, and no driving between midnight and 5 a.m. that first year.
Press Exam mode under the question, then Start the exam. Press Missed to retry wrong answers until you get them right. Clear my progress, pressed twice, wipes all scores and saved questions on this device.
Since August 12, 2026, a second 20-over speeding violation within twelve months adds 2 points, and 100 mph or more adds 4, under C.R.S. 42-4-1101(13) and (14).
Questions and answers
How many questions are on the Colorado permit test?
The Division does not say. Its @Home Driving Knowledge Tests page, its permits page and the Colorado Driver Handbook, all read 18 September 2026, print no question count and no pass mark. The @Home page allows 60 minutes, and any number of attempts but only two in one day. Exam mode asks 25, this site's length, with no clock and no pass line.
Does this page have Colorado permit test answers?
No. This site does not hold the Division's exam questions. Each practice question was written from the statute, and its explanation names the C.R.S. subsection so the law can be checked. The Division has its own handbook and practice quiz.
What changes for Colorado permit applicants in 2027?
House Bill 24-1021 covers permit applications made on or after January 1, 2027. The Division's August 27, 2026 release says applicants aged 15 through 17 will need a 30-hour driver education course, and older applicants under 21 that course or a 4-hour driver awareness program. Permits obtained earlier are not affected.
