How this list was compiled: Written from the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices for Streets and Highways, 11th Edition (December 2023), Federal Highway Administration, https://mutcd.fhwa.dot.gov/kno_11th_Edition.htm, checked 2026-09-18. Each question names the MUTCD section it was written from. Licence: Own work. Question wording, answer choices and explanations were written for this site from the MUTCD text; nothing is copied from a state driver manual or another practice test.

How it works

The Utah Driver License Division gives a never-licensed applicant a closed-book written knowledge test of 50 questions. The Utah Driver Handbook sets the pass mark at 80%, which is 40 correct. This unofficial Utah permit practice test draws on 364 questions written from the Utah Code, each linked to its subsection, plus 48 federal road sign questions. Checked 18 September 2026.

Untimed, twice a day, three tries per fee

The Utah permit test has no clock. The 2026 handbook says most people finish in 30 to 45 minutes. You may test twice a day, and one fee covers three attempts within 12 months. The learner permit costs $19.00, starts at age 15, and lasts 18 months. Before the full license comes the online Traffic Safety and Trends Exam, which demands a 100% score.

Where the Utah Code sets its own numbers

Section 41-6a-502 draws the DUI line at a blood or breath alcohol concentration of .05 grams, and section 53-3-231 allows a driver younger than 21 no measurable alcohol. Section 41-6a-528 makes 105 miles per hour reckless driving by definition. Chapter 41-8 keeps drivers younger than 17 off the road between 12:00 a.m. and 5:00 a.m. Any practice permit test Utah learners pick should reach those sections.

  • Exam mode, below the question, matches test day: 50 questions, 40 to pass. Press Start the exam. The result reads Passed or Below the mark and scores each topic.
  • Passing in the oncoming lane ends 200 feet before an approaching vehicle (41-6a-706), and 100 feet before any intersection or rail crossing (41-6a-707). Section 41-6a-706.5: keep three feet from a bicyclist or other vulnerable user.
  • Keep logging supervised driving: the division's permit page lists 40 practice hours, 10 after sunset.

Questions and answers

Is the drivers permit test Utah gives open book?

Not for a first-time applicant. The Driver License Division describes the never-licensed test as closed book with 50 questions, while a previously licensed applicant takes an open-book test of 25. The handbook sets the pass mark at 80% or better. Both sources checked 18 September 2026.

Where do the questions in this Utah driver's permit practice test come from?

From the Utah Code, not from the Driver License Division. Nobody here has seen the division's question pool, and nothing is copied from the Utah Driver Handbook. Each question was written from the code as the Legislature publishes it and links to its section.

Is there a permit practice test Utah's licensing agency publishes itself?

Yes. The Driver License Division posts a 30-question practice quiz at dld.utah.gov/practice-test. The division says it shows the format and style of its questions, does not cover everything on the real test, and that applicants should study the Utah Driver Handbook.
