The four content areas

The candidate bulletin gives licensing laws and professional ethics 40 percent, legal standards 30, investigation process and case management 15, and evidence, documentation and court procedures 15. The bank keeps those shares.

What is left out

The one privately published book on the bulletin's reference list; every question comes from a statute, rule or court rule on that list. R156-92 is an emergency rule in force for 120 days from September 1, 2026, so check the Division's Laws and Rules page for its replacement.

  • The real examination is open book: the bulletin marks which printed laws and rules may come into the session.
  • Before placing a tracking device on a vehicle, ask a state entity whether a protective order covers the owner (Utah Code 76-12-305).
  • Print your name and license number on the first page of each document you serve (Utah Code 78B-8-302).

Questions and answers

Is there an exam for a Utah private investigator license?

Yes, for a new agent license only. Utah Code 58-92-308 requires it, and the Division's Examination Information page says the registrant, apprentice and agency classifications take no exam at this time.

How many questions are on the Utah private investigator exam?

By the candidate bulletin, 110 in 180 minutes: 100 are scored and 10 are unscored pilot questions. The pass mark is 75 percent, the fee is $85, and it may be taken at a test center or at home.

What are the requirements for a Utah private investigator agent license?

Be at least 21, clear the criminal background check, show 5,000 hours of investigative experience, file a surety bond of at least $10,000 and pass the examination (Utah Code 58-92-302, 58-92-303 and 58-92-307; R156-92-303).

Who licenses private investigators in Utah?

The Division of Professional Licensing, since September 1, 2026. The Bureau of Criminal Identification's page says licensing transferred on that date, and a license the bureau issued expires on the date shown on it (R156-92-201a).

How soon can I retake the Utah private investigator exam?

After 30 days. The bulletin sets no limit on the number of attempts under one approval, and says an approval, like a passing result, is valid for 1 year.
