Washington State private investigator practice test: which exam this is

The department's examination is for agency principals and certified trainers. An unarmed investigator instead takes four hours of preassignment training and a test that a certified trainer verifies, on the topics of WAC 308-17-300, which this bank also covers.

How the questions are spread

The study guide gives state laws 45%, federal laws 30%, court systems 7.5%, legal procedures and definitions 10% and other public information 7.5%. The 80 questions keep those shares.

What is left out

Court decisions, legal dictionary terms and investigative technique are not asked. Every answer was read in its statute or rule on October 12, 2026.

  • Washington requires the consent of all participants before a private conversation is recorded (RCW 9.73.030).
  • Carry the license card whenever you work, and show it on request (RCW 18.165.080).
  • A company name may not include the word "police" (RCW 18.165.050).
