How it works

Texas calls its permit a learner license, issues it from age 15, and passes any knowledge exam at 70 percent. This unofficial Texas permit practice test holds 341 questions written from the Transportation, Penal and Alcoholic Beverage Codes, each linked to its section on the Legislature's site. Another 48 cover national road signs. Statutes read 19 September 2026.

DPS gives the exam, and the Texas DMV handles titles and plates

Transportation Code 521.001 gives driver licensing to the Department of Public Safety. The Texas DMV titles and registers vehicles. So the knowledge exam is a DPS exam, not a DMV one. The Texas Driver Handbook, revised January 2026, passes you at 70 percent. DPS prints no question count, so Exam mode's 25 questions are this site's choice.

Feeder roads, beaches and 70 mph

Start with the state's own figures. Section 545.352 makes 70 mph lawful on a numbered highway outside an urban district, 60 on an unnumbered one, 30 in an urban district and 15 in an alley or on a beach. On a feeder road you yield to traffic leaving or entering the freeway (545.154). Illegally passing a stopped school bus starts at a $500 fine (545.066).

  • Section 521.222: the adult beside a learner must be 21 or older with a year's driving experience, and may not sleep or be intoxicated.
  • Under 18, section 545.424 bars driving from midnight to 5 a.m. without a listed reason, and more than one passenger under 21 who is not family.
  • The alcohol ladder: 0.08 for adults, 0.15 for a Class A misdemeanor, any detectable amount under 21.

Questions and answers

Is there a published length for the Texas learners permit test?

Not one we could find. The Texas Driver Handbook and the DPS licensing pages, checked 19 September 2026, give a 70 percent pass mark and no question count. Section 521.161 allows three tries at each part per application. Exam mode, below the question, asks 25 and passes you at 18 right. Its result adds a line for each topic.

Who can hold a Texas learner license, and what is the fee?

Section 521.222 opens it at 15 to anyone under 18 who has passed the classroom phase of driver education and every exam except the driving test. The DPS fee page, checked 19 September 2026, lists $16, including a $1 administrative fee. It expires on the 18th birthday.

Is this the Texas driving permit test that DPS gives?

No. This site has never seen the DPS exam, and nothing here is copied from the handbook's Appendix C review questions, the state's own study material. Every question was written from a section of Texas law and links to it.
