Scoring key

Unofficial practice sheet
Our own rows under the headings of the Texas road test rule. Not the Department of Public Safety's score sheet; it cannot be handed in.
On-street limit over 30
15.56(b)(4): the applicant is disqualified as soon as minor mistakes total more than 30 points on the on-street test.
No value for one mistake
The rule gives its limits in points and prints no point value for any single mistake. A number on this sheet is a count of mistakes, not a point total.
Standalone examinations
15.56(a) says the road test consists of three separate standalone examinations: on-street, backing and parallel parking. Which maneuver falls under which is our reading of its list.

On-street maneuvers 15

  • 1. Start Count each mistake made getting the vehicle under way.
  • 2. Quick smooth stop Count every time the vehicle was slow to halt or halted roughly.
  • 4. Upshifting Count each mistake going up to a higher gear.
  • 5. Downshifting Count each mistake coming down to a lower gear.
  • 6. Lane change Count each mistake moving from one lane into the next.

  • 8. Use of lanes Count each mistake in which lane was used and how it was held.
  • 9. Right-of-way Count each mistake over who goes first.
  • 10. Posture The rule says only posture. Count what the supervising driver would call a lapse.

  • 12. Traffic signals Count each mistake at a light.
  • 13. Traffic signs Count each mistake at a posted sign.
  • 14. Left turns Count each mistake while turning left.

Rejection standards 9

  • Avoidable accident First rejection standard, 15.56(b)(1). Any contact the applicant could have prevented, with another vehicle, an object or a pedestrian, counts whoever was responsible, when damage or injury results. Type 1.
  • Crash avoided only by others (b)(2)(A), first dangerous action: it took the defensive driving of someone else, or a pedestrian's dodge, to prevent an accident. Type 1.
  • Curb or sidewalk mounted (b)(2)(D), fourth dangerous action: the vehicle is driven with a wheel, or several, across the curb line or up on the sidewalk. Type 1.
  • Lack of cooperation (b)(5): refusing to try a maneuver in good faith, repeatedly not following instructions, offering a bribe or gratuity, arguing over the scoring, or refusing a required seat belt or restriction such as corrective lenses. Type 1.
  • Loss of control, hazard (b)(2)(B): any loss of control of the vehicle that creates a hazard. Type 1.
  • Rejection lines marked The eight lines above, added. The rule treats each one as grounds to stop the test.
  • Stall that obstructs traffic (b)(2)(C): the vehicle stalls in the middle of a busy intersection so as to obstruct traffic. Type 1.
  • Violation of law (b)(3): any act the driver might be arrested for, or that might make the driver liable for damages in case of accident. Type 1.
  • Warning prevented a crash (b)(2)(E): an accident was prevented only by a warning from the examining officer. On a practice drive, read it as the supervising driver's warning. Type 1.

Backing and parallel parking 3

  • 3. Backing The backing test is scored by itself. The rule names the maneuver and gives no parts, so this row is one count of mistakes for each run.
  • 16. Parallel parking The parallel parking test is scored by itself, where it applies. One count of mistakes for each run.
  • Ran over parking standards (b)(2)(F): the vehicle runs over the parking standards on the parallel parking test. The rule lists it with the dangerous actions. Type 1.

Key 7

  • Backing limit On the backing test the line is lower: over 5 points and the applicant is out, under the same paragraph.
  • No value for one mistake The rule gives its limits in points and prints no point value for any single mistake. A number on this sheet is a count of mistakes, not a point total.
  • On-street limit 15.56(b)(4): the applicant is disqualified as soon as minor mistakes total more than 30 points on the on-street test.
  • Parallel parking limit Over 7 points on this test alone disqualifies, paragraph (b)(4).
  • Standalone examinations 15.56(a) says the road test consists of three separate standalone examinations: on-street, backing and parallel parking. Which maneuver falls under which is our reading of its list.
  • Unofficial practice sheet Our own rows under the headings of the Texas road test rule. Not the Department of Public Safety's score sheet; it cannot be handed in.
  • The vehicle, rule 15.54 A current and valid registration, a seat for the examiner and a door beside that seat that opens safely from inside and outside. Only the applicant and Department personnel ride, unless an interpreter is needed.

How this list was compiled: From two sections of Title 37 of the Texas Administrative Code, Part 1 (Texas Department of Public Safety), Chapter 15, both read 2026-10-05 in the copy kept by Cornell's Legal Information Institute, which says it updates state regulations quarterly: section 15.56, Road Test, https://www.law.cornell.edu/regulations/texas/37-Tex-Admin-Code-SS-15-56 (its history note: adopted effective October 30, 2000, 25 TexReg 10747; amended effective December 13, 2009, 34 TexReg 8786), and section 15.54, Vehicle Inspection, https://www.law.cornell.edu/regulations/texas/37-Tex-Admin-Code-SS-15-54 (last amended effective September 22, 2015, 40 TexReg 6354). The Secretary of State's own copy of the code sits behind a portal that could not be opened the same day; the contents pages of the Texas Register on the Secretary of State's site, every weekly issue from October 3, 2025 to October 2, 2026, list no proposed or adopted change to either section. From 15.56, as facts in our own words: the three standalone examinations, the sixteen listed maneuvers with their numbers, the rejection standards (accident, six dangerous actions, violation of law, lack of cooperation) and the three limits of more than 30, 5 and 7 points. From 15.54: what the vehicle must have and who may ride. The rule prints no point value for a single mistake and no size for a parking space, so none is printed here. Ours, not the state's: the layout, one count of mistakes for each maneuver, placing maneuvers 3 and 16 on sheets of their own, the short row names of the rejection standards, and the totals. This is not the Department's score sheet, it cannot be handed in as one, and nobody at the Department has seen it. Licence: own work

Mark a Texas practice drive

1. Press Print blank sheet and take the paper along.

2. On the drive, the supervising driver your permit requires marks paper only at stops, and speaks up or takes over the moment it is needed.

3. Parked, type each row's mistakes under that drive. The sheet adds the fourteen on-street rows.

4. Open Backing test or Parallel parking and type one count for each run.

5. Type the date in place of a drive's name.

Questions and answers

What is on the Texas practical driving test?

The state rule says the road test consists of three standalone examinations: the on-street test, the backing test and the parallel parking test. It lists sixteen maneuvers, from start and quick smooth stop to right turns and parallel parking, if applicable.

How many points can you miss on the Texas driving test?

The rule disqualifies an applicant as soon as minor mistakes total more than 30 points on the on-street test, more than 5 on the backing test or more than 7 on the parallel parking test. It prints no value for one mistake.

What ends a Texas driving test under the rule?

A preventable accident, a dangerous action such as a wheel over the curb or running over the parking standards, a violation of law, or a lack of cooperation such as refusing a maneuver. Each is a row on these sheets.

Is there a sheet for Texas driving test practice parallel parking runs?

Yes, the Parallel parking sheet: one count of mistakes for each run and a line for running over the parking standards. The rule gives no size for the space, so this page gives none.

Is this the Texas driving test score sheet examiners mark?

No. The rule read for this page does not show the examiner's sheet or the value of any mistake. These sheets count mistakes beside the rule's maneuver names and print its three limits. No office accepts them.
