Which Texas laws the bank draws on
The Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) calls this exam Texas Commercial Rules. Its handbook, DL-7C, tells applicants to pay close attention to Section 14, Special Requirements for Texas Commercial Motor Vehicles, so drivers look for a Texas special requirements CDL test. Every question here comes from the Transportation Code itself, mostly chapters 522, 545, 547 and 621.
Ten topics, then exam mode
Questions come ten to a round. After a round, More options lists ten topics, from height, width and length to towing, crossings and operating rules. Exam mode asks 25 questions and you need 20 right, the 80 percent in the DPS handbook.
Sizes: 102 inches wide, 14 feet high, 45 feet long for a single vehicle, overhang three feet front, four rear.
Weights: 20,000 pounds on a single axle, 34,000 on a tandem and 80,000 gross without a permit (621.101).

Questions and answers
How many questions are on the Texas Commercial Rules test?
DPS does not publish a count. Its handbook, DL-7C (revised March 2026), says the knowledge exams use multiple choice and matching questions and each section takes 80 percent to pass. With no DPS figure to copy, exam mode here uses 25.
Is the special requirements CDL test Texas law or federal law?
These questions are Texas law: each cites the Texas Transportation Code and none cites 49 CFR. The DPS handbook says it does not reproduce the Texas Commercial Driver License Law exactly. Federal rules are on the general knowledge, air brakes and endorsement pages.
Do I take this test before general knowledge?
Yes. The DPS handbook lists the knowledge exams in order: Texas Commercial Rules, General Knowledge, then Combination, Airbrakes and endorsements if required. After a failed test, the application stays active for 90 days or three failed attempts, whichever comes first.
