How this list was compiled: Written from the Electronic Code of Federal Regulations, Title 49, Part 393, sections 393.5, 393.100 to 393.108 and 393.120, at https://www.ecfr.gov/current/title-49/part-393. The text in force on 2026-09-17 was read on 2026-10-04 and is byte for byte the same as the text in force on 2026-10-01. Each question names its paragraph. That New York has a metal coil endorsement with its own written test was read in the New York State Commercial Driver's Manual (CDL-10): section 1 (edition 2/26, Internet Archive copy of 2026-03-01) lists endorsement M, Metal Coil, and section 3.4.5 (edition 1/24, Internet Archive copy of 2025-07-14 of https://dmv.ny.gov/brochure/cdl10sec03.pdf) describes the written test. Vehicle and Traffic Law section 501(2)(b)(ix) was read in a public copy at https://newyork.public.law/laws/n.y._vehicle_and_traffic_law_section_501. The agency's own site refused a direct request on 2026-10-04, so the manual was read in archive copies. Licence: Own work. Questions, answer choices and explanations were written for this site from the regulation text; nothing is copied from New York's manual MV-79, its working load limit table MV-79C, any state exam, the AAMVA test item pool or another practice test.

How it works

This unofficial metal coil endorsement practice test has 90 questions written from the federal coil rule, 49 CFR 393.120, and the tiedown rules beside it, read 4 October 2026. New York's own coil manual, MV-79, is not used.

What New York's M endorsement test is based on

New York's Commercial Driver's Manual, CDL-10, lists the endorsement as M, Metal Coil. Its section 3 (edition 1/24, read 4 October 2026 in an archived copy) says the written test is based on the state's manual for the safe securement of metal coils, MV-79, and its working load limit table, MV-79C. This bank asks the federal coil rule instead.

Six topics from the federal rule

Questions come ten to a round. After a round, More options lists six topics: which coils the rule covers, eyes vertical, eyes crosswise, eyes lengthwise, loads without anchor points, and tiedowns and working load limits.

  • The line is 5,000 pounds, for one coil or for coils grouped together (393.120(a)).
  • Eyes crosswise: tiedowns through the eye must not cross in an X seen from above.
  • Wrong answers collect under Missed in More options until you answer them right.

Questions and answers

Is this a NY metal coil endorsement practice test?

It is practice for New York's M endorsement, written from federal regulation text. Nobody here has seen the state's test, and its questions come from New York's own manual, MV-79, so read that manual as well.

Who needs a metal coil endorsement in New York?

The state's CDL manual says any commercial driver who transports metal coils that individually or bundled together weigh 5,000 pounds or more. Vehicle and Traffic Law section 501 lists the endorsement and leaves its scope to the commissioner's regulations.

How many questions are on the metal coil endorsement test?

No count was read on the agency's pages, so none is given here. Section 1 of the manual (edition 2/26) says commercial knowledge test questions are multiple choice with three choices, and that the passing score for each test is 80 percent.

What does 49 CFR 393.120 cover?

Coils of 5,000 pounds or more, alone or grouped. It sets tiedown patterns by eye direction, prohibits a nailed wood cradle and X-pattern tiedowns through a crosswise eye, and has a paragraph for sided vehicles and containers without anchor points.
