How it works

This unofficial tanker endorsement practice test asks 109 questions from 49 CFR, checked 3 October 2026: cargo tank test intervals and markings, outage, loading attendance, manholes and emergency shutoffs. Surge, baffles and partial-load braking are left to state manuals.

Four topics of nine, and the missing five

49 CFR 383.119 names nine knowledge topics for the N endorsement. Five are driving technique: surge, braking, baffles, product density, and grades and curves. State manuals teach those, so this bank asks none. It keeps to retest and marking, emergency systems, tank construction and operating practices.

Seven topics, then 25 questions

Practice comes in rounds of ten. After a round, More options shows seven topics; Loading, outage and attendance is the largest at 26 questions. Exam mode pulls 25 questions and passes at 20 right, the 80 percent in 49 CFR 383.135. A pass says nothing about surge.

  • Six marking letters: V external visual, I internal visual, P pressure, L lining, T thickness, K leakage.
  • External visual inspection is yearly, but every 6 months on vacuum-loaded tanks with full opening rear heads (180.407(c)).
  • Misses sit under Missed in More options until answered right.

Questions and answers

Does this CDL tanker practice test cover surge and baffles?

No. 49 CFR 383.119 lists cargo surge, baffled and non-baffled tanks and braking when empty, full and partially full as knowledge topics, but this bank keeps to facts written in the regulations. Each state teaches the handling in its CDL manual.

Is there a skills test or required training for the N endorsement?

Federal rules ask for neither. 49 CFR 383.93 requires a knowledge test for the tank vehicle endorsement, and the entry-level training rule in 380.609 names only the passenger, school bus and hazardous materials endorsements. A state may ask for more.

Which loads need the tanker endorsement, and when is hazmat needed too?

Under 49 CFR 383.5 a tank vehicle carries liquid or gas in tanks rated over 119 gallons each that total 1,000 gallons or more. If the load is also a placarded hazardous material, 383.93 requires that endorsement too, and the license shows code X.
