How it works

The 141 questions in this unofficial passenger endorsement practice test cover federal rules, checked 3 October 2026: standee lines, emergency exits, hazardous materials on a bus, bus driver hours and wheelchair lifts. Loading and braking technique are in state manuals.

Six listed topics, and what federal text says about them

49 CFR 383.117 names six knowledge topics for the P endorsement. This CDL passenger endorsement practice test keeps to what a regulation states: the 2-inch standee line in 393.90, the 99-pound hazardous materials limit in 177.870, the 8 hours off duty in 395.5. The 18 lift and wheelchair questions go past that list, into the ADA rules of 49 CFR Parts 37 and 38.

Eight topics, then 25 questions

Practice comes ten questions at a time. Between rounds, More options lists eight topics, the two largest at 21 questions each. Exam mode asks 25 questions, and 20 right passes, the 80 percent in 49 CFR 383.135.

  • Bus hours differ from truck hours: 10 hours of driving after 8 off duty, none after the 15th on-duty hour.
  • Under 49 CFR 383.123 a school bus applicant must pass the passenger tests too, so work this bank first.
  • Missed questions return under Missed in More options until answered right.

Questions and answers

Is the passenger CDL test the same in every state?

The standard is. 49 CFR 383.117 lists the knowledge for the passenger CDL test and 383.135 sets the pass mark at 80 percent, so the federal rules apply everywhere. Fees and the technique in the CDL manual belong to each state.

Do I need training before the P endorsement skills test?

A first-time applicant does. 49 CFR 380.609 requires the passenger endorsement training from a provider on the Training Provider Registry, and 383.73 stops a state from giving the skills test until it verifies completion electronically. Drivers issued the P before February 7, 2022 are exempt.

Which bus should I take the skills test in?

A passenger vehicle of the group you plan to drive. Under 49 CFR 383.95, testing in a Group B bus brings restriction M, no Class A passenger vehicle, and testing in a Group C vehicle brings restriction N, no Class A or B passenger vehicle.
