How this list was compiled: Written from the 2026 Indiana Code, Title 9 (Motor Vehicles), as published by the Indiana General Assembly at https://iga.in.gov/laws/2026/ic/titles/9 (full text file https://iga.in.gov/ic/2026/Title_9.html), downloaded and read on 2026-10-04: IC 9-24-8.5 and IC 9-24-3-4.5 (the for-hire endorsement), IC 9-13-2 (definitions), IC 9-20 (size and weight), IC 9-19 (equipment) and parts of IC 9-21. Each question names its section. Nine questions about applying and about the exam itself rest on the Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles' own publications, named in each: the Indiana Driver's Manual (author: Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles; published July 2026; pages 16 and 66, https://www.in.gov/bmv/licenses-permits-ids/files/drivers-manual.pdf) and the bureau's For-Hire Endorsement page (https://www.in.gov/bmv/licenses-permits-ids/learners-permits-and-drivers-licenses-overview/drivers-license/for-hire-endorsement/), both read on 2026-10-04. The bureau's page says the for-hire knowledge examination is prepared for by studying the Driver's Manual. This bank does not follow the manual's order or wording, uses none of its figures or sample questions, and does not cover everything in it. Licence: Own work. Questions, answer choices and explanations were written for this site from the Indiana Code text and, where named, from facts stated in the Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles' own manual and web page; nothing is copied from the manual, its sample questions or another practice test.

How it works

This unofficial for-hire endorsement practice test is for Indiana drivers. The bureau says its exam is based on the Indiana Driver's Manual; these 127 questions come mostly from the Indiana Code and do not cover everything in that manual.

Who needs the for-hire endorsement

The endorsement goes on an Indiana driver's license. It covers hauling property for hire in a vehicle registered at 16,000 to 26,000 pounds, and carrying passengers for hire in a vehicle designed for fewer than 16 people, driver included (IC 9-24-8.5-6). It does not cover a commercial motor vehicle.

What the real exam is

The Indiana Driver's Manual (published July 2026, page 66) says the exam has 25 questions and you can miss five. Exam mode, under the question, draws 25 and sets the pass line at 80 percent to match. Applicants must be 18 and have held a license for more than one year (IC 9-24-8.5-5).

  • A plain Indiana driver's license does not cover a vehicle operated for hire (IC 9-24-3-4.5).
  • Hauling property for pay in a vehicle registered under 16,000 pounds is not counted as transporting for hire (IC 9-24-3-4.5).
  • Width tops out at 8 feet 6 inches and height at 13 feet 6 inches, load included (IC 9-20-3).

Questions and answers

Does this cover the whole Indiana for-hire exam?

No. The Bureau of Motor Vehicles says to study the Indiana Driver's Manual for the exam. These questions come mostly from the Indiana Code, so the manual's safe driving chapters and road signs are missing. The manual is free on the bureau's site.

How many questions are on the Indiana for-hire endorsement test?

The Indiana Driver's Manual, published July 2026, says on page 66 that the exam has 25 questions and that you can miss only five. Exam mode here uses the same length and pass line, with this site's own questions.

How much does the for-hire endorsement cost in Indiana?

Indiana Code 9-24-8.5-5 sets a fee of $19. The bureau's page says it is charged only the first time the endorsement is added, and that it is not charged when the endorsement replaces an old chauffeur's license.

Is the Indiana chauffeur's license still valid?

The bureau's page says a public passenger chauffeur's or chauffeur's license stays valid until the date printed on it. Renewing, replacing or amending one produces a for-hire endorsed driver's license instead.
