How this list was compiled: Indiana Code 25-20.2, Home Inspections, in the Indiana Code 2026 as published by the Indiana General Assembly (https://iga.in.gov/laws/2026/ic/titles/25#25-20.2), and Title 878 of the Indiana Administrative Code, Home Inspectors Licensing Board, Article 1 (https://iar.iga.in.gov/code/current/878/1), both read on October 16, 2026. The board's licensing information page of the Indiana Professional Licensing Agency (https://www.in.gov/pla/professions/home-inspectors-home/home-inspectors-licensing-information) was read the same day. Each question names its section and links to it. Licence: Own work. Every question, wrong choice and explanation was written for this site from the text of the statute and the board's rules. Nothing comes from an examination, a candidate bulletin's sample questions, a course provider, a prep course or a question pool.

How it works

This unofficial Indiana home inspector license practice test asks what the state's own law says: 99 of our own questions from IC 25-20.2 and 878 IAC 1. Not affiliated with the Indiana Home Inspectors Licensing Board.

Read the full guide

What the questions cover

The license law: who is exempt, what a home inspection report must state, the board, the application, insurance, renewal, discipline and the limits on lawsuits. Then the board's rules on fees, the 60-hour course, continuing education, retirement and fines.

What is left out

How building systems work and fail, and the board's performance standards and code of ethics beyond what the statute itself requires of a report. Indiana tests applicants with a national examination, so none of that is asked here.

  • A report must say it does not address environmental hazards, wood destroying insects or subterranean systems (IC 25-20.2-2-7).
  • Renewal takes 32 hours of continuing education every two years, at least 75 percent from Category I (878 IAC 1-5-1, 1-5-2).
  • A damages suit over an inspector's services must be filed within two years (IC 25-20.2-9-1).

Questions and answers

What exam does Indiana require for a home inspector license?

The National Home Inspector Examination: 878 IAC 1-3-3 names it, and the board's licensing page says applicants send in a copy of the original score report. The fee goes directly to the examination service (878 IAC 1-3-1).

Does Indiana have its own home inspector exam?

No. The state writes no examination and publishes no question count or pass mark. The 50-question test offered here is this site's choice, on Indiana law only.

How do you become a home inspector in Indiana?

Be 18 with a high school diploma or Indiana GED, complete a board approved course of at least 60 hours, pass the examination, and show general liability insurance of at least $100,000 (IC 25-20.2-5-2, 878 IAC 1-3-2).

How much does an Indiana home inspector license cost?

The application and issuance fee is $50, and renewal is $50 every two years, with a $50 penalty when late (878 IAC 1-3-1). The examination fee is separate.

How many continuing education hours does an Indiana home inspector need?

32 hours in each two-year renewal period, none carried over. A first renewal after 12 to 24 months takes 16 hours, and under 12 months none (878 IAC 1-5-1).
