How this list was compiled: Written for this site from Chapter 80 of Title 35 of the Rules of the City of New York, "Drivers of Taxicabs, For-Hire Vehicles and Street Hail Liveries", read on 2026-10-04 in the copy the New York City Taxi and Limousine Commission publishes among its current rules (https://www.nyc.gov/assets/tlc/downloads/pdf/rule_book_current_chapter_80.pdf, marked updated June 6, 2025). No question rests on anything else. The commission's Driver Education page (https://www.nyc.gov/site/tlc/drivers/driver-education.page), read the same day, says its exam covers the topics of its three-day (24-hour) driver license course and its Passenger Assistance and Wheelchair Accessible Vehicle training course; this bank is drawn from one chapter of its rules and does not cover everything in those courses. Licence: Own work. Questions, answer choices and explanations were written for this site from the commission's published rule text; nothing is copied from the commission's course, its study guide, its exam or another practice test.
How it works
This unofficial TLC practice test is free to use online. The commission's exam covers its 24-hour course and wheelchair accessible vehicle course; these 158 questions come from Chapter 80 of the city's rules and do not cover everything in them.

What the real exam is
The commission's Driver Education page says the TLC Driver License Exam has 80 multiple-choice questions and passes at 70 percent, which is 56 right. New applicants complete a 24-hour course first. Exam mode, under the question, draws 80 and sets the pass line at 70 percent to match.
What these questions cover
Every question restates a rule in Chapter 80 of Title 35 of the Rules of the City of New York, the chapter for drivers of taxicabs, for-hire vehicles and street hail liveries: licensing, points, driving hours, refusals, fares, taxi stands and the taximeter. Each explanation names its section.
Passenger time is capped at 10 hours in any 24-hour period and 60 hours from Monday through Sunday (35 RCNY 80-14).
Six to nine points in 15 months brings a suspension of up to 30 days; ten or more brings revocation (35 RCNY 80-27).
A taxicab trip to Newark Airport is the meter plus $20, and the passenger pays the tolls both ways (35 RCNY 80-17).
Questions and answers
Does this cover the whole TLC driver license exam?
No. The commission's Driver Education page says the exam covers its 24-hour course and its wheelchair accessible vehicle course, and offers a free study guide and practice exams. These questions come only from Chapter 80 of the city's rules, so the rest is missing.
How many questions are on the TLC exam?
The commission's Driver Education page says 80 multiple-choice questions, with a grade of 70 percent or higher to pass, which is 56 right. Exam mode here uses the same length and pass line, with this site's own questions.
How much does the TLC exam cost?
The commission's license page lists $49 for each exam attempt, paid to its testing vendor. The same page lists a $252 application fee for the three-year license. Chapter 80 sets the license fee at $84 a year.
How long does a TLC driver license last?
Three years from the date it is issued, under section 80-06. That section says to file a renewal at least 30 days before the license expires, and allows a late renewal for up to 180 days with a $25 fee.
