What the Iowa nail technologist exam is
Iowa's licensing department asks for 75 percent or higher on the national theory nail technology exam. The candidate bulletin lists 110 questions, 10 of them unscored, in 90 minutes. The outline has eight domains, from infection control and safety (15 percent) to nail enhancement services (20 percent).
What this bank asks
Twenty-two questions on infection control and safety, 9 on tools and supplies, 13 on pedicure tubs, paraffin and other services, and 6 on license law, which the national outline does not list. Anatomy, nail disorders, product chemistry and the steps of nail enhancements have no Iowa text and are not asked; the national manicure theory test on this site covers them.
- Electric file bits are cleaned in an ultrasonic cleaner or acetone, then fully immersed in disinfectant (481 IAC 943.13).
- Chamois buffers and liquid MMA monomer may not be on the premises, and a styptic pencil found there counts as used (481 IAC 943.15, 943.17).
- Each foot spa cleaning is recorded at the time, signed with a license number, and kept two years (481 IAC 943.24).
Questions and answers
How many hours is nail tech school in Iowa?
325 hours. The licensing department asks for a transcript or diploma from a Board-licensed school showing 325 hours, and 481 IAC 941.14 splits them into 150 of core life sciences, 50 of nail technology theory and 125 of applied practical instruction.
Does Iowa have a practical exam for nail technicians?
The Department's page for the nail technologist license names one examination, the national theory nail technology exam, and the candidate bulletin lists only that exam under Nail Technician.
Are these the real Iowa nail technician exam questions?
No. Every question is our own, written from 481 IAC Chapters 940 and 943 and Iowa Code chapter 157 and linked to them. Nothing comes from the examination or the sample questions in its bulletin.
