How this list was compiled: Every question rests on one section of Massachusetts law, read on 2026-09-30 and named in the question's own source line. General Laws, read on the Legislature's site, https://malegislature.gov/Laws/GeneralLaws : chapter 90, sections 7B, 7D, 8A 1/2 and 14, and chapter 85, section 14B. Registry of Motor Vehicles regulations, read at Cornell Legal Information Institute, https://www.law.cornell.edu/regulations/massachusetts , which says state regulations are updated quarterly: 540 CMR 7.09 (its note: adopted by Mass Register Issue 1360, effective 3/9/2018, amended by Issue 1432, effective 8/24/2020), 21.02, 21.03, 21.04 and 27.03. Licence: Own work. Every question, every wrong choice and every explanation was written for this site from the text of the statute or regulation it cites. Short quoted phrases are from Massachusetts statutes and regulations, which are public law. Nothing is taken from a registry manual, a training course, a prep company or another practice test.

How it works

This unofficial Massachusetts 7D license practice test asks 87 questions on the law for drivers who carry school pupils in small vehicles: the license, seat belts, flares, signal lamps and the registry's vehicle standards. Each names a section read on September 30, 2026.

What the law says about the 7D test

Chapter 90, section 8A 1/2 of the General Laws requires a written test, a visual test and a physical examination before the registrar issues the license. It gives no question count or pass mark, so this page shows none. The license takes its name from section 7D, which sets the rules for the vehicle.

Using this 7D practice test

The Start from menu under the question splits the bank into eight subjects. After each answer the page shows the rule in plain words and a link to the section, on the Legislature's site for statutes and at Cornell's Legal Information Institute for registry regulations.

  • Three flares: about 100 feet behind in your lane, 100 feet or more ahead, and one at the traffic side, 10 feet or more away.
  • Red signal lamps flash only while you are stopped for pupils. Headlamps stay on whenever the vehicle is in operation.
  • Wrong answers go to Missed until you answer them right.

Questions and answers

Is this a Mass 7D license practice test from the registry?

No. It is unofficial practice written from the General Laws and the registry's regulations, not from the registry's test, so none of these is a real test question. The Registry of Motor Vehicles did not write or review it.

How old do you have to be for a MA 7D license?

At least 21, with three continuous years as a licensed operator. Section 8A 1/2 also bars a license after certain convictions, and the license is valid for twelve months.

Is there a 7D practice exam with a set number of questions?

The statute gives no count or pass mark for the written test, so this page shows none. Exam mode, under the question, draws 25 questions and marks them at the end. That length is this site's choice.

What must a 7D vehicle carry?

Section 7D requires one pair of chock blocks, a fire extinguisher, three flares and a seat belt for each permanent seat. 540 CMR 7.09 also lists a first aid kit, a body fluid clean-up kit, a seat belt cutter and three reflective triangles.
