How it works

Every free question in this unofficial New Mexico permit practice test comes from the Motor Vehicle Code, NMSA 1978 Chapter 66, and names its section: 195 questions, plus 48 on federal road signs. Expect New Mexico's own figures, such as 15 mph past a posted school. Code read 18 September 2026.

Who gives the New Mexico knowledge test

New Mexico's licensing agency is the Motor Vehicle Division (MVD), part of the Taxation and Revenue Department. Its learner's permit page, checked 18 September 2026, asks for a vision test and the MVD Knowledge Exam, taken at a field office or an MVD-contracted driver education school. The instructional permit fee there is $10.00.

Three license steps in section 66-5-8

The instruction permit starts at 15 and needs a supervising driver of 21 or older, licensed three years. After six months and 50 practice hours, 10 at night, a teen of 15 and a half may take a provisional license, which bars most driving between midnight and 5:00 a.m. and allows one passenger under 21 from outside the immediate family. The full license follows at 16 and a half.

  • New Mexico repeats 500 feet: dim for oncoming traffic, stay that far behind a fire truck answering an alarm, light a parked vehicle to be seen that far.
  • Two 2025 bicycle rules: under section 66-7-345 a rider may pass a stop sign without stopping, or go on red after stopping, when no one with the right-of-way is near.
  • A pass must end 100 feet before an oncoming vehicle (section 66-7-312). Outside a business or residence district trucks keep 300 feet apart (66-7-318).

Questions and answers

How many questions are on the New Mexico permit test?

The Motor Vehicle Division gives no question count on the pages checked 18 September 2026 or in its Driver Manual, so Exam mode's 25 questions are this site's number. Driver Procedures Manual chapter 11, dated December 8, 2017, requires 70 percent or better on Class D and M written tests. Exam mode, below the question, scores against it. There too, Missed holds your wrong answers until you get them right.

What happens if I fail the New Mexico written test?

Section 66-5-9 allows not more than three attempts within six months of applying. The division's written examination policy, revised May 26, 2016 and checked 18 September 2026, permits two tries a week and, after a third failure, no retest until six months from the first examination.

Are these the questions the Motor Vehicle Division asks?

They are not. Nothing here is copied from the division's exam or Driver Manual. The bank was written from NMSA 1978 Chapter 66 on NMOneSource, the New Mexico Compilation Commission's site, and each explanation links there.
