How this list was compiled: Written from Minnesota Statutes chapters 65B, 169, 169A and 171 and Minnesota Rules chapter 7410, each section opened on the Revisor of Statutes site, https://www.revisor.mn.gov/statutes/cite/169.974 and the sibling pages linked under each question, checked 2026-09-19. Each question names its section and links to it. Exam facts on the page (knowledge test taken at an exam station, permit valid one year) come from Minnesota Driver and Vehicle Services, https://dps.mn.gov/divisions/dvs/license-and-id/motorcycle-drivers/motorcycle-permit and https://dps.mn.gov/divisions/dvs/license-and-id/motorcycle-drivers/motorcycle-endorsement, checked 2026-09-19. Neither page, nor the Minnesota Motorcycle and Motorized Bicycle Manual at https://assets.dps.mn.gov/files/dvs/motorcycle-manual.pdf, prints a question count, pass mark or time limit for the motorcycle knowledge test, so none is given. The sources differ on one point: Minn. Stat. 169.974, subd. 2(c)(2) lists enrollment in an approved safety course for every permit applicant, while the agency's permit page and Minn. R. 7410.4580, subp. 3 ask only applicants under 18 for course proof. Licence: Own work. Questions, answer choices and explanations were written for this site from the statute and rule text; nothing is copied from the Minnesota Motorcycle and Motorized Bicycle Manual, the Motorcycle Safety Foundation or another practice test.

How it works

Minn. Stat. 169.974 is the heart of this unofficial Minnesota motorcycle permit practice test: 157 questions from Minnesota statutes and rules, with the section under every one. The permit limits lead: no passengers, no night riding, headgear at any age. Riding technique is not covered, so keep the state manual open too. Statutes checked September 2026.

Section 169.974, the rider's statute

Minn. Stat. 169.974, subd. 5(g) lets a motorcycle pass within its lane at up to 25 mph and no more than 15 mph over traffic. Headgear is for riders under 18 and permit holders, while every operator wears eye protection. A passenger must reach the footrests with both feet. Section 169.06, subd. 9 gives a defense when a red light fails to detect a stopped motorcycle.

What Driver and Vehicle Services publishes about the test

The MN motorcycle permit test is taken at a DVS exam station with no appointment, once per day, and the permit fee is $29. The statute lists safety course enrollment for every permit applicant. DVS asks only applicants under 18 for a certificate. DVS prints no question count or pass mark. So Exam mode's 25 questions are this site's choice, and its score has no pass or fail. In this MN motorcycle permit practice test, a miss waits under Missed, and Clear my progress wipes it.

  • Learn the subd. 2(d) permit limits as a set: no passengers, no night riding, headgear at any age.
  • Keep the small machines apart: a motorized bicycle stays at 50 cc and 30 mph, and an autocycle takes Class D.
  • Same-lane passing has two caps: 25 mph outright and 15 mph over traffic, so in 5 mph traffic the ceiling is 20.

Questions and answers

Where is lane filtering not allowed in Minnesota?

Minn. Stat. 169.974, subd. 5(h) takes four places out of the rule: the approach, drive-through or exit of a roundabout, a school zone, a work zone with a single travel lane, and a freeway or expressway on-ramp where vehicles are queued.

Who can get a motorcycle instruction permit in Minnesota?

Minn. Stat. 169.974, subd. 2(c) names a person over 16 who holds a valid driver's license, is enrolled in an approved motorcycle safety course and passes the written examination. The DVS permit page asks only applicants under 18 for a course certificate. The permit lasts one year.

Did Driver and Vehicle Services write this Minnesota motorcycle permit test?

They did not. This site is unofficial, has no tie to the Minnesota Department of Public Safety or Driver and Vehicle Services and has never seen their questions. Every question comes from statutes and rules. The state's test also covers riding technique, so read the Motorcycle and Motorized Bicycle Manual too.
