How this list was compiled: Written from Minnesota Statutes chapter 97B (Hunting) and chapter 97A (Game and Fish) as the Office of the Revisor of Statutes publishes them at https://www.revisor.mn.gov/statutes/cite/97B and https://www.revisor.mn.gov/statutes/cite/97A (sections 97B.001, 97B.015, 97B.020, 97B.021, 97B.0215, 97B.022, 97B.045, 97B.055, 97B.065, 97B.071, 97B.075, 97B.081, 97B.085, 97B.086, 97B.091, 97B.095, 97B.115, 97B.205, 97B.207, 97B.301, 97B.325, 97B.326, 97B.327, 97B.328, 97B.603, 97A.031, 97A.037, 97A.405, 97A.451 and 97A.535). Both chapters were read on 2026-10-12; each question names its section. The course facts (class sessions, the field day, the hybrid and adult options, certificates from other states) are the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources' own, read the same day on its Hunter Education/Firearms Safety Certification for Youth page at https://www.dnr.state.mn.us/safety/firearms/index.html and its Firearms Safety Certification for Adults page; the youth page is the published outline this page follows. The department publishes no question count, pass mark or time limit for a written test, so none is given here. Licence: Own work. Questions, answer choices and explanations were written for this site from the text of the Minnesota Statutes and the facts on the department's public pages; nothing is copied from a firearms safety manual, a study guide, an online course, a chapter review or an examination.

How it works

Unofficial practice for Minnesota firearms safety certification: our own questions from chapters 97A and 97B of the Minnesota Statutes, each with its section. Safe handling of firearms is taught in the class and shown at the field day.

Rules that are Minnesota's own

In the firearms deer season the cap and outer clothing above the waist are blaze orange or blaze pink. Agricultural land needs permission even when it is not posted. A firearm rides unloaded and cased, with stated exceptions.

What the course is

The Department of Natural Resources describes a classroom course of at least four sessions and a field day of seven scenarios. It publishes no written-test length or pass mark, so none is set here; exam mode's 25 questions are our own length.

  • Told in person to stay off land? A hunter may not return to it within one year.
  • A deer stand site counts as baited for ten days after all bait is removed.

Questions and answers

Is this a youth hunter education practice test for Minnesota?

Yes, for the law part. These questions cover the statutes a young hunter meets: who must be alongside, blaze clothing, trespass. It is unofficial practice, not the department's course.

How old do you have to be to take firearms safety in MN?

At least 11, under Minn. Stat. 97B.015. The certificate is not valid for hunting until the year the student reaches age 12. Adults of 16 and older certify by an online course with a virtual field day, or in a classroom.

Who needs a firearms safety certificate in Minnesota?

Anyone born after December 31, 1979 who wants a license to take wild animals by firearms, under Minn. Stat. 97B.020. Active-duty service members who completed basic training are excepted, and an apprentice-hunter validation covers two license years.

Is this the official MN hunter safety test?

No. It is unofficial and not affiliated with the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources. The questions are our own, written from the Minnesota Statutes; none comes from the department's course, its manual or any test.
