How this list was compiled: Written from Title 75 (Vehicles) of the Pennsylvania Consolidated Statutes, as published by the Pennsylvania General Assembly at https://www.palegis.us/statutes/consolidated/view-statute?txtType=HTM&ttl=75, and from Title 67 of the Pennsylvania Code, chapters 75 (driver's license examination), 157 (sound levels) and 175 (vehicle equipment, including Subchapter H on motorcycles), on the official Pennsylvania Code site, https://www.pacodeandbulletin.gov/Display/pacode?file=/secure/pacode/data/067/067toc.html&d=reduce, both checked 2026-09-19. Each question names its section and links to it. Exam facts on the page: the 80 percent pass mark is 67 Pa. Code § 75.5; the one-year permit, the sunrise to sunset hours, the instructor-only passenger rule and the three-in-five-years reapplication cap are 75 Pa.C.S. § 1505. PennDOT's pages https://www.pa.gov/services/dmv/get-a-class-m-motorcycle-license and https://www.pa.gov/agencies/dmv/faqs/driver-licensing-faqs/motorcycle-permit-faqs, checked 2026-09-19, give no question count or time limit for the motorcycle knowledge test, so none is used here. Licence: Own work. Questions, answer choices and explanations were written for this site from the statute and regulation text; nothing is copied from the Pennsylvania Motorcycle Operator Manual, PennDOT's practice test app or another practice test.

How it works

Two books of Pennsylvania law feed this unofficial Pennsylvania motorcycle permit practice test: Title 75 of the Consolidated Statutes and Title 67 of the Pennsylvania Code. Its 137 questions each link to their section and cover permit rules, the helmet exceptions at 21, lane use, equipment and the Class M road test's scoring. Sources checked September 2026.

PA motorcycle permit restrictions, from section 1505

The PA motorcycle permit restrictions are in 75 Pa.C.S. § 1505(c): ride only between sunrise and sunset, under a licensed motorcycle operator unless you already hold another class of license, and carry nobody but a licensed instructor. Under 18, add six months on the permit, 65 certified hours and the department-approved safety course.

How to get a motorcycle permit in PA

PennDOT's Class M page gives the steps: take form DL-5 to a Driver License Center, pass a vision screening and the knowledge test, and pay $12. The PennDOT motorcycle permit test draws on the Motorcycle Operator Manual, PUB 147, the PA motorcycle permit book, and riding technique is found only there, so read it too.

  • Learn what a Class C license already covers under § 1504: a 50 cc automatic motor-driven cycle, an enclosed-cab three-wheeler and an autocycle.
  • Keep the helmet routes apart: 21 with two full calendar years licensed, or 21 with an approved course. Neither lifts the eye protection rule.
  • Press Exam mode under the question, then Start the exam. Marks come at the end. Press Missed to retry wrong answers until you get them right. Clear my progress, pressed twice, wipes all scores and saved questions on this device.

Questions and answers

How many questions are on the PennDOT motorcycle knowledge test?

PennDOT does not publish a count. Its Class M page, its permit FAQ and the manual give no question count or time limit. The pass mark is the state's: 67 Pa. Code § 75.5 asks for 80% or more. Exam mode asks 25, this site's length, and 20 right shows Passed.

What happens when a PA motorcycle permit runs out?

It cannot be renewed. Section 1505(d) gives the permit one year, ends it early after three failed examinations, and caps reapplying at three times in five years. PennDOT's permit FAQ adds that you wait for the old permit to expire, then file form DL-5 again and retake the vision screening and knowledge test.

Does PennDOT supply these Pennsylvania motorcycle questions?

PennDOT does not. This is not a government website, is not affiliated with the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation and has never seen its questions. Every question names its section of Title 75 or the Pennsylvania Code, so a PA motorcycle permit answer can be checked against the law. PennDOT has its own practice test app.
