Who takes the special point examination
A driver whose record reaches six points or more for the first time. PennDOT's written notice requires the special examination or a driver improvement school (75 Pa.C.S. § 1538(a)), and its fact sheet allows 30 days.
What it asks
PennDOT's fact sheet The Pennsylvania Point System, March 2024, names three subjects: safe driving practices, departmental sanctions and related safety issues. The topics here follow them, with the point schedule as a fourth.
Where the answers come from
Title 75 of the Pennsylvania Consolidated Statutes, read in the General Assembly's chapter files on October 12, 2026: chapters 15 and 17 for points and suspensions, and chapters 31 to 38, 43 and 45 for the driving rules.
Three points come off for every 12 consecutive months with no point violation, suspension or revocation (§ 1537(a)).
At 11 points the license is suspended: 5 days a point the first time, 10 the second, 15 the third (§ 1539).
When a point suspension has been served, the record shows five points (§ 1545).
Questions and answers
How many points does the special point exam remove?
Two, under 75 Pa.C.S. § 1538(a)(2). A driver who elects driver improvement school and completes it has four removed. The statute does not let a driver do both.
What happens if you fail the special point exam in Pennsylvania?
Section 1538(a)(3) suspends the operating privilege until the examination is passed or a driver improvement school is completed. The suspension has no fixed length: it ends when one of the two is done.
How long is driver improvement school in Pennsylvania?
A school run by an approved third party lasts no less than four and no more than eight hours, in a classroom, online or both (75 Pa.C.S. § 1549(a.1)).
How many questions are on the PennDOT special point exam?
PennDOT's point system fact sheet does not say, and it gives no time limit or pass mark. Exam mode on this page asks 25 mixed questions with no clock; 25 is this site's number, not PennDOT's.
