What the Mastery Examination covers

The Auto Industry Division's study guide, revised October 24, 2025, prints the law the exam draws on: Title 44, Article 20 with the Dealer Board's regulations, the title, odometer, salvage and lemon law sections of Title 42, and federal rules such as the Buyers Guide.

Where it is taken

Online, supervised by a dealership licensed in Colorado or a third-party administrator the Dealer Board has approved. The division gives the password to that administrator, and an applicant may sit the examination twice in a calendar day.

What is left out

Part 4 on powersports vehicles, which repeats Part 1 nearly section for section, and the franchise sections written for manufacturers. The division's page gives no count of questions by subject.

  • A salesperson's bond is $15,000 and a dealer's is $50,000 (C.R.S. 44-20-113 and 44-20-112).
  • A dealer delivers the certificate of title, or facilitates its delivery, within 30 days after the sale (C.R.S. 42-6-112).
  • An ad with a price for one vehicle names its year, make and model, with the stock number or the full 17-digit VIN (Regulation 44-20-121(3)(i), Rule 3).

Questions and answers

How many questions are on the Colorado car sales license test?

Sixty, and every one must be answered, in at most 90 minutes, by the Auto Industry Division's Mastery Exam instructions. The passing score is 85 percent, which is 51 of the 60.

Is there a Colorado car sales license study guide?

Yes. The division publishes State and Federal Statutes & Regulations related to the Auto Industry and Mastery Exam Study Guide, free on its Mastery Exam page. Each question here names the section of that guide it was written from.

Is the Colorado salesperson mastery exam open book?

Yes. The division's instructions call it an open book examination, so notes and the study guide may be used. The applicant must still answer with no help from anyone else.

Do I have to retake the mastery exam to renew a Colorado sales license?

No. The division says a person who held a current license in the last 12 months need not retake it. A passing score is removed if no license is issued within one year (Regulation 44-20-104(3)(k)).
