How it works
This unofficial California noncommercial Class A practice test holds 101 original questions on towing law, written from the California Vehicle Code as read on October 4, 2026. The California Department of Motor Vehicles gives the real law test; this site is not affiliated with it.

What the noncommercial Class A law test is
The Department of Motor Vehicles' handbook DL 648 names a Recreational Vehicles and Noncommercial Class A Trailers law test, based on that booklet. The handbook states no number of questions and no passing score, so this page states none.
A CA non commercial Class A practice test from the code
Vehicle Code 12804.12 calls the license a restricted class A. The bank covers license classes, hitches, safety chains, brakes, lamps, size limits and lanes. No question is copied from the handbook.
Two texts, two dates
Section 12804.12 changes on January 1, 2027, and section 12804.9 on January 1, 2029. Each question on them says which text it asks.
Start from narrows the bank to license classes, hitches and brakes, lamps and size limits, or lanes and following.
Missed brings back the questions answered wrong, each with its section.
Section 12804.9(b)(1)(A) places a combination in class A when a towed vehicle is rated over 10,000 pounds.
Questions and answers
Is this the DMV noncommercial Class A test?
No. The California Department of Motor Vehicles gives the law test, and this is an unofficial practice bank. Its questions are written from Vehicle Code text, and none is copied from the department's handbook or a department test.
How many questions are on the noncommercial Class A law test?
Handbook DL 648, as the Department of Motor Vehicles served it on October 4, 2026, states no number of questions and no passing score for the law test, so this page states none either.
Which trailers does the Vehicle Code put under a restricted class A license?
Section 12804.12, as it reads until January 1, 2027, names a trailer coach rated over 10,000 pounds and a fifth-wheel travel trailer rated over 15,000 pounds, towed not for compensation. Section 12804.14 adds a farmer's livestock trailer.
What other tests does handbook DL 648 list?
Beside the Recreational Vehicles and Noncommercial Class A Trailers law test, the handbook lists the basic Class C law test, a pre-trip inspection test, a skills test and a driving test while towing. This page practices the law side only.
Where do the answers come from?
Each explanation names its Vehicle Code section, as read on the California Legislature's website on October 4, 2026. Sections 12804.9 and 12804.12 each stood in two texts that day, and those questions say which one.
