An FLSD practice test in question form
The Start from menu drills one part at a time: getting the certificate, the plan and the owner, director and staff duties, drills and training, fire emergencies, non-fire emergencies, the logbook. Building systems, fire science and the on-site exam are not covered.
Exam mode uses the notice's pass mark
Exam mode passes at 70 percent, the score the notice of examination asks for. The real computer exams are longer: 120 questions in 186 minutes for the fire component and 55 questions in 83 minutes for the non-fire component.
- Office building fire drills are semiannual, and quarterly for the two years after the plan is accepted (section 10.1).
- One deputy warden for each 7,500 square feet or part of it; one male and one female searcher per employer (sections 3.5.2 and 3.6).
- Logbooks stay on the premises three years for fire safety, five for emergency action and five when combined (section 8.3).
Questions and answers
How many questions are on the F-89 exam?
There are two computer exams. The fire component has 120 multiple-choice questions in 186 minutes and the non-fire component has 55 in 83 minutes, each passed at 70 percent, says the notice of examination revised 10/26/2022. An on-site exam follows.
Are these the real F-89 exam questions?
No. This site has never seen the department's exams and is not affiliated with the New York City Fire Department. The questions were written from the public curriculum and the notice of examination. No certificate holder has reviewed them yet.
What does FLSD stand for?
Fire and Life Safety Director. The curriculum says the 2014 Fire Code replaced the earlier Fire Safety Director and Fire Safety and Emergency Action Plan Director certificates with this single one, the F-89 Certificate of Fitness.
Is a course required before the F-89 exam?
Yes. The notice asks for a diploma from a 31-hour course at a school the department approves: 20 hours on general topics and fire emergencies, 11 hours on non-fire emergencies. This page is not that course and gives no credit toward it.
