For years the car line at Brook Lane School backed up onto the main road each afternoon. Last fall the principal split dismissal into two waves ten minutes apart, with the younger grades leaving first. Because fewer families now arrive at the same moment, the line clears before it reaches the road. The change had a second effect that nobody planned: older students, who wait indoors for the second wave, use the ten minutes to pack up, and teachers report fewer forgotten coats and lunch boxes. What does "waves" mean in this passage?VCLA test blueprint, Subtest I (Reading), objective 0001: Understand the meaning of words and phrases

The old gymnasium had been condemned for a decade before the town found the money to restore it. Volunteers stripped the warped floor in a weekend, but the roof was a graver matter, and the work stalled for a winter while the council argued. When the doors finally opened, the building was plainer than the drawings had promised. No one minded. On the first evening, the bleachers were full an hour before the game, and the old scoreboard, salvaged from a storeroom, still ran two seconds slow. The parent council should replace the candy sale with a read-a-thon. Selling candy teaches children to sell candy; a read-a-thon has them read. When Fenwick School made the switch last year, it raised just as much money, and its library loans doubled during the drive. Critics say that families enjoy the candy. But a sale that sends children door to door is a chore for the household, while a drive that sends them to a book is its own reward. Anyone who truly values reading knows which to choose. Two parents wrote to the school newsletter about homework in second grade. Ms. Ortega argued that a short nightly task builds a habit: a child who sits down for ten minutes at seven will find it easier to sit down for an hour at fifteen. Mr. Bell replied that habits formed under protest do not last, and that the same ten minutes spent reading for pleasure does more good. When Harlow Elementary turned an unused corner of its playground into a garden, the staff expected a science project. What they got was broader. Third graders who measured bean plants each week began to chart the results unasked, and the cafeteria reported that students took more vegetables on days when the garden's lettuce was served. How this list was compiled: Our own texts and questions, written to the test blueprint of the Virginia Communication and Literacy Assessment (Section 4 of the VCLA study guide, https://www.va.nesinc.com/Content/Docs/VC_SGSection4.pdf, read 2026-10-09; the study guide's contents page is https://www.va.nesinc.com/PageView.aspx?f=HTML_FRAG/VA091_092PrepMaterials.html). The bank holds 40 reading questions, eight for each of blueprint objectives 0001 to 0005, on eight short texts, and 40 writing questions on objectives 0006 to 0012. Every text was written for this page, names no real person, place or event, and holds the answer to its questions. Writing rules were read on 2026-10-09 in the handouts of the Writing Center of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and the Purdue Online Writing Lab; spellings at Wiktionary; the rule for comparing three things at Wikipedia. The written parts of the Writing subtest (three short-answer rewrites, a summary and a composition) are not imitated; objective 0012 is asked here as a choice of revisions. Licence: Questions, texts, choices and explanations are original work of this site.

What the blueprint covers
The test blueprint, read October 9, 2026, gives the Reading subtest five objectives: word meaning, main idea and details, relationships among ideas, critical reasoning, and summaries, outlines and graphics. Writing objectives 0006 to 0012 cover purpose and audience, unity, organization, sentence construction, usage, mechanics and revision.
What this page practices
Eight questions for each reading objective, on eight short texts of our own, and 40 across the seven writing objectives. A timed run asks 40 questions in 2 hours, the Reading subtest's allowance when it is taken alone with an online proctor. The written summary and composition are not imitated; Section 6 of the official study guide holds sample assignments and their score scales.
There is no penalty for a wrong multiple-choice answer, the study guide says, so answer every question.
The study guide suggests about 45 minutes for each writing assignment: a 150 to 250 word summary and a 300 to 600 word composition.
You may retake a subtest after 30 days, and the highest score you earn on each subtest is the one that counts.
Questions and answers
Is this VCLA practice test free?
Yes. All 80 test prep questions are free to take online, with no sign-up. None is taken or reworded from the real test, its sample questions or the official practice tests.
How many questions are on the VCLA?
About 40 multiple-choice questions on the Reading subtest. The Writing subtest has about 40 multiple-choice questions, 3 short-answer items, a written summary and a written composition. Some questions may be unscored trial items.
What is a passing score on the VCLA?
Each subtest is scored from 100 to 300, and 235 is the passing standard for a subtest. A total of 470 across both passes the VCLA, so a score under 235 on one subtest can be offset by the other.
How long is the VCLA?
At a test center, 4 hours of testing for one or both subtests, plus 15 minutes for a tutorial and nondisclosure agreement. With an online proctor, Reading alone is 2 hours and Writing alone is 3 hours.
Is the VCLA still required in Virginia?
Not for an initial license: the exam's site says that requirement ended on July 1, 2024. Its program overview still lists the VCLA as an optional reading and writing test for entry into a Virginia teacher preparation program, so ask your program.
