Seven topics, in the booklet's order
The questions run from the exam and who may do which task, through out-of-service systems with their tags and discs, standpipe types and classes, valves and hose, tanks and fire pumps, to inspection and test intervals, signs and the code.
Exam mode follows the notice
Exam mode takes its length and pass mark from the booklet's test information and runs no clock.
- Tags run red, orange, yellow, green. A white disc marks a system fully out of service and a blue disc one partially out (part 3).
- Each foot of height gives a gravity tank 0.433 psi, and the tank stands at least 25 feet above the highest hose outlet (section 9.2).
- Hydrostatic and flow tests come at least every 5 years; a dry pipe valve's full flow trip test every 3 (section 10.1).
Questions and answers
How many questions are on the S-13 exam?
The booklet revised March 2024 gives 75 multiple-choice questions on a touch screen computer and a passing score of at least 70 percent. It calls the test time-limited and prints no number of minutes. Check the department's current booklet before the exam.
Are these the real S-13 exam questions?
No. This site has never seen the department's exam and is not affiliated with the New York City Fire Department. Every question is new writing based on the S-13 booklet, and its sample questions are not used. No certificate holder has reviewed them yet.
What is the difference between the S-13 and the S-14?
The booklet makes the S-13 a citywide certificate for supervising standpipe systems, personal supervision of multi-zone systems excepted. The S-14 is for a premises with a multi-zone standpipe system and is tied to that premises. Both share one booklet and one test.
Can an S-13 holder repair a standpipe system?
Not on the certificate alone. Part 5 limits the holder to visual inspections, notifications and records. Repairs belong to a master fire suppression piping contractor, or to a master plumber where the standpipe is not combined with sprinklers, each holding an S-13.
