Which permit or license
Alabama issues a pesticide use permit, private or commercial, to buy and use restricted use pesticides, and a separate annual license for custom application for hire. Commercial permits come in five types: custom, custodial, governmental, resident and consultant. All are asked here.
What the exams cover
Rule 80-1-13-.08 lists eight areas for the commercial examination, from labels and safety to equipment, ending with applicable state and federal laws and regulations. This bank is the Alabama part of that last area. Structural pest control under Chapter 28 is not covered.
Length and pass mark
Rule 80-1-13-.08 prints no question count and no pass mark for the commercial exams. A mock exam here is 40 questions, our number, and ends in a score with no verdict.
- Three years runs through the rules: permits renew every three years, and dealer sales records and commercial application records are kept three years.
- Commercial renewal takes 30 points in three years; proven negligent application can cost up to 15 points a year.
Questions and answers
Is this the real Alabama pesticide license test?
No. It is unofficial practice written for this site from the statute and the rules. The real commercial exams come from the state Examining Board, with computer-based testing through Metro Institute, and none of their questions are here.
What score passes the Alabama pesticide applicator exam?
For the private applicator test, 70 percent or higher, by the department's Private Applicators page. Rule 80-1-13-.08 gives no pass mark for the commercial exams, so this page does not guess one.
How much do the Alabama pesticide exams cost?
The department's 2026-2027 schedule lists $75.00 per custom exam at its Montgomery sittings, and $125 per exam for weekly computer-based testing: the $75 fee plus a $50 administrative fee. The permit fee is $45 per category.
When are Alabama pesticide applicator exams given?
Custom applicator exams are given in Montgomery each February, May, August and November, on the third Tuesday, with no pre-registration. Computer-based testing runs weekly at sites across the state. A failed exam can be retaken after 10 days.
How long is an Alabama pesticide permit good for?
Three years from the date of issue, private or commercial. A commercial permit can still be renewed for up to one year after it expires; after that a new permit is obtained by examination.
