How it works
An unofficial Alabama nail technician practice test on the State's own text: the Board's rules, the Code of Alabama and the Board's banned items list. Not affiliated with the Alabama Board of Cosmetology and Barbering or its testing vendor.

What the Alabama manicurist exam is
The Board's test taker guide for manicurists gives a theory test of 60 scored and 5 unscored questions in 90 minutes. Half of it is safety and infection control; client consultation and nail analysis is 18 percent, skin care 10 and nail care 22. A separate practical test is in the same guide.
What this bank asks
Twenty-eight questions on safety and infection control, 10 on nail tools, pedicure bowls and station equipment, 5 on client conditions and scope, and 13 on license law, which the outline does not list. Nail structure, nail disorders, massage movements and enhancement steps are on the manicurist test too; Alabama's rules are silent on them, and this bank leaves them to the site's national manicure theory test.
- Rasps, credo blades and "cheese grater" foot files are implements intended to cut skin and may not be used (rule 250-X-3-.02(9)).
- Pedicure basin liners are single-use, and a bowl's removable parts come out after each client (rule 250-X-3-.02(30)).
- Every shop keeps a blood spill kit as well as a first aid kit (rule 250-X-3-.02(34)).
Questions and answers
How many hours do you need for a manicurist license in Alabama?
750 clock hours in a school, or 1,200 hours as an apprentice under a manicurist licensed at least five years (Code of Alabama 34-7B-21). The Board's exam requirements page says school and apprentice hours may not be combined.
What score passes the Alabama manicurist exam?
At least 70 percent on the theory test and on the practical test, by the test taker guide. Board rule 250-X-6-.01 also asks a grade of at least 70 percent on licensure examinations.
Are these the real Alabama nail technician exam questions?
No. They are our own questions on Alabama's Administrative Code, the Code of Alabama and the Board's banned items page, each with a link to its source; the vendor's test questions were not used.
