How this list was compiled: Examination: the Arizona Barbering and Cosmetology Board's Exam Information page (https://bcb.az.gov/schools/exam-information) says Arizona uses the national examinations of the National-Interstate Council of State Boards of Cosmetology (NIC) for nail technology, taken through its test administrator. Outline of the theory examination: NIC's National Nail Technology Theory Examination Candidate Information Bulletin, effective September 1, 2025 (https://prov-testing.github.io/nic_cib/nail_technology_national_theory_english_2025.html): 110 items, of which 100 are weighted, 90 minutes, eight domains. Facts: Arizona Administrative Code Title 4, Chapter 10 (Supp. 24-1), on the Secretary of State's site (https://apps.azsos.gov/public_services/Title_04/4-10.pdf), and Arizona Revised Statutes Title 32, Chapter 5, on azleg.gov. What the Arizona nail technician exam is

Arizona uses NIC's national examinations for nail technology, a theory examination and a written practical, both taken on computer. The theory examination has 110 questions in 90 minutes, of which 100 count; the written practical has 55, of which 45 count. Infection control and safety is 15 percent of the theory outline.

What this bank asks

Thirty questions on infection control and safety, 6 on nail tools and restricted items, 11 on the pre-service step, pedicure tubs and scope, and 13 on license law, which the national outline does not list. The examination also asks anatomy, nail disorders, the chemistry of nail products and enhancement steps. No Arizona rule states those, so they are left to the national manicure theory test on this site.

  • Nippers may be used only to remove loose cuticles (A.A.C. R4-10-112(Q)).
  • Tub filters, screens, drains and jets come out and are scrubbed at the end of the day (A.A.C. R4-10-112(G)).
  • Used tools go in a covered receptacle labeled "dirty"; disinfected ones in a dry, covered container labeled "ready to use" (A.A.C. R4-10-112(C)).

Questions and answers

How many hours is nail tech school in Arizona?

At least 600 hours in a school licensed by the Board (A.R.S. 32-512). A student may perform services on the public at school only after 80 hours of nail technology training, with a licensed instructor present.

What is the passing score for the Arizona nail technician exam?

The Board's test administrator lists a minimum score of 75 on the theory and on the written practical examination, and says these are weighted, scaled scores. Under A.R.S. 32-515 an applicant retakes only the part failed.

Does this page have the real Arizona state board nail questions?

No. The 60 questions were written for this page from A.A.C. R4-10 and A.R.S. Title 32, Chapter 5, and each links to its rule or section. NIC's examination questions and the samples in its bulletins were not used.
