What the exams cover

Rule 4-66-57 lists ten knowledge areas for certification, from label comprehension and safety to laws, supervising non-certified applicators and professionalism. This bank is the laws and rules, in Hawaii's own text: certification, records, the school buffer zone and penalties.

Core, then category

Every commercial category requires passing the Core exam first, and a Core pass is valid for six months. Private categories have no Core requirement; private category 1 comes before 2 and 3.

Exam mode

Exam mode draws 50 questions at the 70% pass mark in rule 4-66-57. The University of Hawaii's practice exams give sets of 50 at 70% too, as in the commercial Core exam. The department's pages give no time limit, so there is no clock.

  • Records are kept two years, the certificate lasts five, and the annual restricted use report is due thirty days after the year ends.
  • The school buffer is one hundred feet, Monday to Friday, 7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Questions and answers

Is this the real Hawaii pesticide applicator test?

No. It is unofficial practice written for this site from chapter 149A and chapter 4-66. The real exams are given by the Hawaii Department of Agriculture and Biosecurity, and none of their questions are here.

Is there an official Hawaii pesticide applicator practice test?

Yes. The department's Exam Preparation page links online practice exams, made with the University of Hawaii at Manoa, for Core and several categories. Take those too. This page drills the statute and the rules, section by section.

Where is the Hawaii pesticide study guide?

The department's Exam Preparation page links online study guide packets for each category, developed with the University of Hawaii at Manoa. This page is not a study guide; it checks the law after you have read one.

How much does the Hawaii pesticide applicator exam cost?

$50.00 per examination. When Core is taken along with a category exam the Core fee is waived, so Core plus one category is $50.00. A new certification or a renewal costs $100.00, by the department's certification page.

How long is a Hawaii pesticide applicator certification good for?

Five years from the date the examination was passed, under rule 4-66-60(d). Renewal is by retaking the exam or by continuing education hours, such as 30 for ornamental and turf or 20 for a private applicator.
