State of Michigan insurance adjusters test study guide: three exams

Michigan gives three adjuster exams: Independent Adjuster without workers' compensation authority (Series 16-71), Independent Adjuster with it (Series 16-72) and Public Adjuster (Series 16-70). The topics here follow the statutes their outlines cite.

What is left out

Insurance basics, policy forms and adjusting practice make up most of each exam and rest on textbooks, so they are not asked. The workers' disability compensation topic is tested only on Series 16-72, and the adjusters for the insured topic follows the Public Adjuster outline.

  • An adjuster for the insured may charge no more than 10% of what the insurer pays in settlement (MCL 500.1226).
  • A claim not paid within 60 days after proof of loss bears 12% simple interest (MCL 500.2006).
  • In a fire policy appraisal each side names an appraiser within 20 days, and any 2 of the 3 set the loss (MCL 500.2833).
