How this list was compiled: Oregon Revised Statutes Chapter 701, sections 701.005, 701.081 and 701.445 to 701.455 (the Oregon Legislature's own page, https://www.oregonlegislature.gov/bills_laws/ors/ors701.html), and Oregon Administrative Rules Chapter 812, Division 8, Certification of Individuals and Licensing of Businesses Engaged in Home Inspections, rules 812-008-0000 to 812-008-0214 (the Secretary of State's rules database, https://secure.sos.state.or.us/oard/displayDivisionRules.action?selectedDivision=3593), both read on October 14, 2026. The Construction Contractors Board's certification page (https://www.oregon.gov/ccb/pages/specialty%20licenses.aspx) and its Home Inspector Standards sheet were read the same day. Each question names its section and links to its source. Licence: Own work. Every question, wrong choice and explanation was written for this site from the text of the statute and the rules. Nothing comes from an examination, a course provider, a prep course or a question pool.

How it works

This unofficial Oregon home inspector license practice test asks what state law says: 88 questions of our own from ORS Chapter 701 and OAR Chapter 812, Division 8. Oregon certifies home inspectors. Not affiliated with the Oregon Construction Contractors Board.

What the questions cover

Certification and the business license that goes with it, education points, renewal and continuing education, then the contract and report rules, the standards of behavior, and the standards of practice system by system as OAR 812-008-0200 to 0214 print them.

What is left out

How building systems work and fail. Oregon tests that with a national examination it does not write, and no Oregon statute or rule states it, so it is not asked here.

  • The certificate lasts two years, and renewal takes 30 continuing education units (OAR 812-008-0060, 812-008-0070).
  • A report that lists only deficiencies does not meet the rule: every listed item is recorded (OAR 812-008-0202).
  • The inspecting business may not take repair work on the house for 12 months after the inspection (ORS 701.450).

Questions and answers

What exam does Oregon require for home inspector certification?

The National Home Inspector Examination, by OAR 812-008-0050. The Construction Contractors Board's page gives it 200 multiple choice questions, four hours and a $225 fee, and says the score report goes in with the application.

Does Oregon have its own home inspector exam?

No. Since October 1, 2015 the rule names only the national examination, so the state publishes no pass mark of its own. The 50-question test offered here is this site's choice, on Oregon law only.

How do you become a home inspector in Oregon?

Show 20 education points, pass the examination, sign that you have read the standards of behavior and practice, pay the $150 fee, and be an owner or employee of a business licensed by the Board (OAR 812-008-0040, ORS 701.445).

Is it a license or a certification in Oregon?

Both. The person is an Oregon certified home inspector, and the business holds a residential general, residential specialty or home inspector services contractor license from the Board (OAR 812-008-0030).

Is there an Oregon home inspector study guide?

The Board publishes the law, not a guide: its Home Inspector Standards sheet prints OAR 812-008-0200 to 0214, and its certification page links the application packet and the national examination's candidate bulletin.
