How this list was compiled: Connecticut General Statutes Chapter 400f, Home Inspectors, sections 20-490 to 20-495a (the General Assembly's own page, https://www.cga.ct.gov/current/pub/chap_400f.htm), and Regulations of Connecticut State Agencies sections 20-491-1 to 20-491-28 (the Secretary of the State's eRegulations system, https://eregulations.ct.gov/eRegsPortal/Browse/RCSA/Title_20Subtitle_20-491/), both read on October 14, 2026. Two facts about the application come from the Department of Consumer Protection's form HOI-01, revised 12/2023 (https://portal.ct.gov/-/media/DCP/occpro/forms/appHOIHOPpdf.pdf), read the same day. Each question names its section and links to it. Licence: Own work. Every question, wrong choice and explanation was written for this site from the text of the statute and the rules. Nothing comes from an examination, a course provider, a prep course or a question pool.
How it works
This unofficial Connecticut home inspector license practice test asks what the state's own law says: 94 of our own questions from General Statutes Chapter 400f and Regulations 20-491-1 to 20-491-28. Not affiliated with the Connecticut Department of Consumer Protection.

What the questions cover
The licensing statute and the Home Inspection Licensing Board, the intern permit and its supervision rules, then the regulations: the purpose and scope of an inspection, each system's standard, the general limitations, the code of ethics and continuing education.
What is left out
How building systems work and fail. No Connecticut statute or regulation states that knowledge, so it is not asked here.
An intern needs 100 inspections for the license, the first ten under direct supervision (Section 20-493b).
The report says where the smoke and carbon monoxide detectors are and whether they were tested (Regulation 20-491-10).
Renewal takes 20 continuing education hours every two years, three of them on current law (Regulation 20-491-23).
Questions and answers
What exam does Connecticut require for a home inspector license?
A competency examination administered by the Department of Consumer Protection (Section 20-492b). The Department's application form adds that a candidate who has passed the National Home Inspector Examination sends that score report with the application.
How many questions are on the Connecticut home inspector exam?
The statute and regulations do not say, and the Department's form says exam details are sent once the application is accepted. The 50-question test offered here is this site's choice.
How do you become a home inspector in Connecticut?
Finish high school, complete a board-approved 40-hour training program, hold an intern permit under a licensed supervisor, perform 100 supervised inspections, pass the examination, and pay the $40 application fee and $200 license fee (Sections 20-492 to 20-493b).
How many times can you take the Connecticut home inspector exam?
Three times in the year that starts with the first examination application. After a third failure the applicant may not be examined again until one year after the date of that third examination (Section 20-493b).
When does a Connecticut home inspector license expire?
Licenses are biennial under Section 20-492a, with a $250 renewal fee. The Department's application form says licenses and intern permits expire on June 30 of odd-numbered years.
