What the outline lists

The Bail - Nevada Specific outline names four sources: general knowledge, the bail and motion sections of NRS Title 14 (178.484 to 178.552), the Insurance Code with NRS chapter 697 at its center, and NAC chapter 697. It gives no weights.

Numbers to know

Premium is 15 percent of the bond or $50, whichever is greater. Notice of a missed appearance goes out within 20 days, and the bond is forfeited 180 days after that notice. Records stay 3 years after the surety's liability ends (NRS 697.300, 178.508, 697.290).

What is left out

Division bulletins, the federal Violent Crime Control Act and the unfair trade practice sections of NRS chapter 686A are on the outline and are not asked here.

  • Collateral may not leave Nevada and is held as a fiduciary, apart from the agent's own funds (NRS 697.320).
  • An early surrender without good cause means the premium goes back in full; NAC 697.550 lists good cause (NRS 697.330).
  • Register again with the sheriff and the district court clerk every July 1 (NRS 697.270).

Questions and answers

How many questions are on the Nevada bail agent exam?

50 scored questions plus 5 unscored pretest questions, in 1 hour 15 minutes, by the state's content outline and candidate handbook. One Bail examination serves bail agents, bail solicitors and bail enforcement agents.

What score passes the Nevada bail exam?

At least 67 percent of the questions answered correctly (NAC 697.125). The candidate handbook says bail score reports show a percent correct, unlike the scaled scores of Nevada's other insurance examinations.

How do I become a bail agent in Nevada?

Be 18 or older and a Nevada resident for a year, complete the 6-hour bail course, pass the examination, hold an appointment from a surety insurer and file the license bond (NRS 697.150, 697.190). The Division's page gives the bond as $25,000.

Is there an official NV bail agent study guide?

The official material is the state's content outline for the Bail examination, which lists the laws tested, and the candidate handbook for the Division of Insurance's examinations, which gives the rules of the test. The questions here are written from those laws.

How long is a Nevada bail agent license good for?

Three years. Renewal needs a 3-hour continuing education program approved by the Commissioner, and a late request within 30 days of expiration costs 150 percent of the fees (NRS 697.230).
