How it works

This unofficial Louisiana bail bonds practice test follows the state's Series 108 outline: 64 questions of our own from the Code of Criminal Procedure, Title 22 and the Civil Code. Not affiliated with the Louisiana Department of Insurance.

Read the full guide

The three parts of the outline

Insurance regulation is 7 percent of the examination, the legal framework 21 percent, and bail bond principles and practices 72 percent. The questions here keep close to those shares.

Three time limits

Notice of an arrest warrant must go to the bail agent and the surety within 60 days of a missed appearance. A surrender within 180 days of that notice discharges the surety. The state has five years to ask for a forfeiture judgment (C.Cr.P. arts. 333, 331, 335).

Newer than the outline

The outline is dated March 2015 and cites R.S. 15:85 for failure to appear. Today that subject sits in Code of Criminal Procedure article 333, and the questions follow the articles as they read now.

  • No surrender for an unpaid premium until 30 days after the bond is posted (R.S. 22:1585).
  • On courthouse or jail grounds, deal only with the defendant, the indemnitor, an attorney, or a minor's parent or guardian (R.S. 22:1584).
  • The surety pays the officer $25 for accepting a surrender and receives a certificate of surrender (C.Cr.P. art. 331).

Questions and answers

How many questions are on the Louisiana bail bond exam?

50 scored questions in 60 minutes, with 70 percent correct to pass, by the content outline for the Series 108 examination. The candidate bulletin says 5 to 10 unscored experimental questions may be added and count against the time.

What do I need before I take the Louisiana bail bond exam?

A completed Bail Bond Apprentice Program: three consecutive months working at least 24 hours a week under a licensed bail bond producer, eight hours of instruction, and a notarized affidavit filed with the Department of Insurance (R.S. 22:1574).

Is there a study guide for Louisiana bail bonds?

The Department of Insurance's candidate bulletin links a content outline for the bail bond examination that lists each topic with its code section. This page follows that outline, and every answer links to the article or section it was written from.

How much does a bail bondsman charge in Louisiana?

Twelve percent of the face amount of the bond or $120, whichever is greater. The legislature sets that rate, not the commissioner of insurance (R.S. 22:1443).

How long is a Louisiana bail bond license good for?

A producer files for renewal every two years. A bail bond producer needs 12 hours of approved bail underwriting instruction for each renewal, at least six of them on bail enforcement (R.S. 22:1547, 22:1573).
