What the exam covers

The outline splits the examination three ways: insurance regulation 25 percent, the legal framework 30 percent, bail bond principles and practices 45 percent. The questions here keep close to those shares.

Where the law is

Licensing and conduct are in A.R.S. 20-340 to 20-340.06 and the Department's rule R20-6-601. Arrest and surrender by a surety are in A.R.S. 13-3885 and 13-3974. Release, appearance bonds and forfeiture are in Rule 7 of the Rules of Criminal Procedure.

Numbers to know

A $10,000 license bond. Notice of a recovery agent to the Department within 24 hours. Notice of a warrant to the surety within 10 days, and a forfeiture hearing within 120 days (A.R.S. 20-340.02, 13-3885; Rule 7.6).

  • Collateral is held as a fiduciary, apart from the agent's own funds, and must be reasonable for the size of the bond (R20-6-601; A.R.S. 20-340.03).
  • An early surrender means returning all premium unless a court acted, the arrestee misrepresented, or the hazard rose materially (R20-6-601).
  • A bail recovery agent needs the consent of the occupants present to enter an occupied home (A.R.S. 13-3885).

Questions and answers

How many questions are on the Arizona bail bond agent exam?

60 questions in one hour, and 70 percent correct passes, by the state's content outline and candidate bulletin for the Series 13-35 examination, revised June 11, 2026.

What should I study for the Arizona bail bond exam?

The candidate bulletin points to A.R.S. Title 20 and Title 20, Chapter 6 of the Administrative Code. The outline goes further: arrest by a surety, bond types, release and forfeiture come from the criminal code and the court's criminal rules.

Who can get a bail bond agent license in Arizona?

A person at least 18 who has lived in Arizona for the year before applying, passes the examination, submits fingerprints and keeps a $10,000 bond on deposit through the director (A.R.S. 20-285, 20-340.01, 20-340.02).

How many times can I take the Arizona bail bond exam?

Four times in a twelve-month period. After a fourth failure the candidate waits one year before testing again for that line of authority (A.R.S. 20-284).

Does an Arizona bail bond agent need continuing education?

No. The candidate bulletin says continuing education is not required to renew a bail bond agent license. The license itself expires quadrennially, at the end of the licensee's birth month (A.R.S. 20-289).
