How it works
Maryland gives no separate bail exam: a bail bondsman holds the insurance producer license. This unofficial Maryland bail bond agent practice test is 62 questions of our own on bail statutes and regulations. Not affiliated with the Maryland Insurance Administration.

Numbers the law sets
Records stay 5 years after the surety liability ends. Soliciting on courthouse grounds costs a licensee a 30-day suspension the first time and 90 days after that (COMAR 31.03.05.10; Criminal Procedure Sec. 5-210).
What is left out
The property and casualty examination's insurance subjects, the Maryland Rules and each circuit court's own bail rules are not asked.
The indemnity agreement's first page must promise a 100% premium refund if the bond is not posted (COMAR 31.03.05.08).
Never put a confessed judgment clause in an installment agreement (Insurance Sec. 10-309).
Return collateral immediately when the bond is discharged, less any unpaid premium (COMAR 31.03.05.14).
Questions and answers
Is there a bail bondsman exam in Maryland?
Not a separate one. The license is identical to an insurance producer license and the applicant must meet the property and casualty producer requirements (Insurance Secs. 10-304, 10-305). The state's examination bulletin lists a Property and Casualty Producer examination and none for bail.
How do I become a bail bondsman in Maryland?
Get the license, be appointed by a surety insurer before doing business and comply with Maryland Rule 4-217. Each year, certify that most of your income comes from bail bondsman services (Insurance Sec. 10-308; COMAR 31.03.05.05).
How much does a bail bondsman charge in Maryland?
The premium under the rates filed with and approved by the Insurance Commissioner, no more and no less. It may be paid in installments under a written agreement (Insurance Secs. 27-216, 10-309).
How long does a bail bondsman have to find someone in Maryland?
The court allows a surety 90 days after the failure to appear, or 180 days for good cause shown, to return the defendant before any forfeiture must be paid (Criminal Procedure Sec. 5-208).
